Formed by Dave Grohl in 1995 the Foo Fighters originally consisted of Dave Grohl (Vocals, Guitars), Pat Smear (Guitar), William Goldsmith (Drums), and Nate Mendel (Bass). During the recording of "The Colour And The Shape" Goldsmith left the Foo Fighters. Pat Smear left after the first half of the 1997 tour and was replaced by Franz Stahl. Likewise, Stahl, who toured with the Foo Fighters during 1997/1998 left the band during the recording of "There Is Nothing Left To Lose".
The Foo Fighters current line up consist of Taylor Hawkins (Drums), Nate Mendel (Bass), and Dave Grohl (Guitar and Vocals). Chris Shifflet also tours with the band and plays Rhythm Guitar.
The band are named after mysterious globes of light that were sighted during WWII, these objects came to be known as 'Kraut Balls' (they were suspected by some to be a secret German weapon) or 'Foo Fighters' (a name taken from a famous saying by the wartime cartoon character 'Smokey Staver').
The Foo Fighters have released three albums "Foo Fighters", "The Colour And The Shape" and "There Is Nothing Left To Lose".
