Typography

Typorganism
A Flash site exploring some interesting typography projects. It's more of an "experience" site than an "information" site. It encourages you to participate and interact with the projects (hint: if nothing is happening, try typing in some letters).

Counterspace
An excellent, clean, and well designed site that offers articles on anatomy, the history of type, a glossary, and more. Unobtrusive and well integrated Flash movies and rollover GIFs illustrate many of the points. The "timeline" item, which shows a history of mark-making, is particularly interesting.

A brief history of type
A fairly detailed history of the development of type, from Gutenberg to Grunge, by Thomas W. Phinney.

Alphabet Soup
A project which "attempts to determine a number of things about the shapes of letters in several different writing systems." Particularly interesting is the fact that the letters are generated by a computer program, which even kerns the letters.

The Elephant's Memory
A pictorial language that attempts to communicate ideas in a more universal fashion. A simple, graphical "alphabet" of icons combine to create visual sentences that are sometimes bizarre and often striking. Apple has a much more detailed article.
