The Magic of House Vandehaar
Spells of House Vandehaar
Pieter-Eeuwke's Clearing the Face
Level: 1
School: Illusion/Phantasm
Range : 0
Duration : 1 hour/level
Area of Effect: Caster's face
Components : V, S, M
Casting Time : 1 turn
Saving Throw: None
This spell just gives the illusion that the caster has beautiful smooth skin on his face. It hides blemishes, rashes, spots and pimples for the duration of the spell.
Pieter-Eeuwke Vandehaar, son of Baron Pieter of Oxhill, presented this spell during the annual magical contest of the Great School of Magic. It won the spell, although gossips argue as to the true reason behind the victory. Some say the standing ovation for the spell from the audience and the students in the panel of judges had the same skin problems of Pieter-Eeuwke, and thus favored the spell. Some say there was some political motivation for making Pieter-Eeuwke win, as it has been a long time since a Flaem had one the contest, as the winning spells of past Flaemish victors were usually fire-based spells.
The material component is a pinch of face make-up.
Burning Tool
Level 1
School: Evocation, Elemental Fire
Range : 10 feet/level
Duration : 1 turn/level
Area of effect: A tiny flame
Components : V, S, M
Casting time : 1 round
Saving Throw: None
The original version of this spell was amongst those of the Vandeekers, a famous Flaemish family of gem cutters, stolen by Baron Pieter Vandehaar of Oxhill. Lord Pieter's son, Pieter-Eeuwke, modified this spell so that it could be used for other purposes besides gem cutting.
By casting this spell, the wizard summons a tiny flame on his finger. Upon concentration, the caster can then move the flame along an object or a surface to create artistic decorations.
The designs created by the spell depend on the artistic skill of the caster. This spell has many versions, each of which only works on one material. The Gem Cutters' Guild in Kopstar has one which works on gems. Pieter-Eeuwke's version works on wood.
The material component is a pinch of sulfur.
Decrease the Wasted Time
Level: 4
School: Alteration
Range : 0
Duration : 1 day
Area of Effect: Caster
Components : V
Casting Time : 1 round
Saving Throw: None
This spell was created by Pieter-Eeuwke Vandehaar, son of Lord Pieter Vandehaar, Baron of Oxhill, and is only known to father and son. Pieter-Eeuwke uses it daily, and his father only uses it on important occasions.
By casting this spell, usually in the early morning, the caster can work for 20 hours straight without resting. After this time, the caster requires four hours of sleep.
Continuous use of this spell can cause abnormal behaviors in the caster such as hyperactivity, tics, lack of concentration, and other quirks. There is a 1% chance per consecutive day of use of the spell that everything he does will fail (i.e. spellcasting, saving throws, proficiency checks, ability checks, attack rolls, etc.) Despite knowing this Pieter-Eeuwke still uses the spell. Apparently, he does not realize that after continuous use of the spell for such a long time he would have to rest for several days or more to regain his energy!
Mediate the Strength with Weakness
Level: 5
School: Alteration
Range : 0
Duration : 1 turn/level
Area of Effect: Caster
Components : V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 round
Saving Throw: None
Pieter-Eeuwke Vandehaar, son of Baron Pieter Vandehaar of Oxhill, devised this spell as a method to improve his appearance when attending social events with his father. However, Pieter-Eeuwke has found the spell useful in the laboratory too, especially if he has to accomplish tasks which demand a lot of strength or nimbleness.
With this spell, the caster is able to raise an ability score by lowering another one by the double amount. At the end of the spell duration, the raised ability is the lowered by the same amount from its original score, for the duration of 1 turn/level of the caster. There is therefore a limit on just how high an ability can be raised, since it can be then lowered to 0.
The material component of this spell is a gemstone, that would depend on the ability to be raised.
The ability scores that will be raised and lowered, and the gemstone required for the spell is determined by the following table:

Treasures of House Vandehaar
Ring of the Ever-Supple Touch
Pieter received this ring from Luuk van der Oest, Guildmaster of the Gem Cutters' Guild in Bergdhoven, as a retribution for a great service of retrieving the lost secrets of gem cutting of the famous Vandeeker family of gem cutters. The eyes and hands of the gem cutter are his most valuable tools. Long ago, the Vandeekers devised a magical ring to keep their hands safe from losing any dexterity and suppleness, and to prevent any afflictions of disease and old age: the ring of the ever-supple touch..
This ring is made by a lijsk leaf wrapped on itself and preserved with a mixture of silver and lijsk sap. With this ring, the hands of the wearer stop aging, as long as the ring is worn. The rest of the body, unfortunately is not affected. The crafting of this item is a well-kept secret of the Gem Cutters' Guild in Kopstar.
Walking Stick of Everywhere
A gift for Lord Pieter Vandehaar from his beloved son, Pieter-Eeuwke, this walking stick is a valuable item made of fire-resistant redwood, with its ends embellished with ivory ornaments. Pieter-Eeuwke worked very hard on this walking stick, but took a long time before he could successfully charge the ivory tips with teleport spells. After the charges are used up, the ivory tip melts, but can be replaced (Pieter-Eeuwke already has a set of charged ivory tips in his laboratory). Afraid to further disappoint his father, Pieter-Eeuwke also did not tell his father that the teleport spell can fail.
Spokesman's Ring
Among Pieter's possession there has to be something acquired without the respect of the law. When the former Headmaster of the Guild of Spokesmen, Piero Recioto came to Kopstar to teach him, Pieter sensed there was something magical about the charismatic appearance of the old man. His ring was the answer. Pieter tried to seize the ring with the force and then the old man died of heart attack. Later, it was not difficult make people believe the old man gifted his ring to his last student few moments before dying.
The Spokesman's Ring raises the charisma score of the wearer to 18 and gives him the skills of Persuasion, Adulation (Flattery), Oratory and Bribery. Normally, it is only worn by members of the Guild of Spokesmen in Glantri City, but many members refuse to wear it, believing its magic spoils them and hinders them from improving their skills. There is one thing about the ring that Lord Pieter does not know about: if the ring is removed against the wearer's will, the immediately wearer dies. The Guild put this contingency to protect its secrets.
Pieter's Blue-Hue Robe (The Robe of the Pure Heart)
This silken blue robe was among one of the few things Pieter retrieved when he searched his father's tower in Oxhill. When worn, the robe shimmers and shines abstract patterns of different hues of blue, changing in an apparently random manner. Pieter has found it particularly useful during private meetings since people is easily distracted by its moving.
There are a couple of things Pieter does not know about the robe. Pieter's father was a dreamer and enchanted this item so that it would have shown what the wearer was feeling by drawing a determinate pattern. However, this pattern this could be understood only by a pure heart, an unlikely event in Glantri. Another effect of the robe is that the wearer feels compelled to always wear blue clothing refusing any other color. A blue Dracologist could easily feel compelled to this robe.
