dustball + this ain't vegas + berkeley Dustball: The nascent Shifty Disco label made Dustball the first Singles Club release and, by mid-1997, they were broadcast on Steve Lamacqs Evening Session. A joint EP with Nought attracted the attentions of John Peel, for whom the band have recorded three sessions. After their debut album appeared the band split, reappearing briefly as Mote, before recruiting Unbelievable Truth drummer Nigel Powell. Since then, Dustball have split their time between academia and discovering Fugazi. Dustball recently helped Shifty Disco to celebrate their 5th birthday by covering the Top 5 favourite Shifty Disco singles, as voted for by listeners, live on the John Peel Show on Radio 1. New single Name & Number available now on Vacuous Pop. Dustball are: Nigel Powell Drums, Tarrant Anderson Bass, Ben 11oyd Guitar and Jamie Stuart Guitar, Vox "The spirit of the Undertones infused with DC hardcore dynamics and Televisions subtley warped fretplay, Dustball throw out sweet curveballs but theres a belligerent hormonal anger behind everything they do. If they werent so pale and skinny, theyd be terrifying." NME "Heres a band so full of the spirit of rock & roll and all the fiery exuberance of punk that they seem fit to explode" Nightshift Magazine "Dustball are a casually confident four-piece who cite Fugazi as an influence. They do the quiet/loud thing, with superfast chord changes and Pixies-esque guitar lines, and occasionally remind you of a hardcore Supergrass"- Venue "Former Oxford teenage darlings now beefed-up as a quartet , Dustball, as well as being super-tight, agreeably loud and rhythmically faultless have in Jamie Stuart one of the best vocalists in the land. Think the energy of Pixies, Fugazi and Superchunk with someone who can hold notes with confidence". - The Independent, 'Single of the Week' review of new single 'Name & Number' (Vacuous Pop 7") "Every so often, you stumble on a gem way down the bill at the Railway. One such jewel was Dustball. A recently reconstructed four-piece from Oxford, they have the passion of the Manics, the charm and inventiveness of XTC and, in singer Jamie, the raw-throated roar of The Vines. Plus they have style, in the form of a stick-twiddling harmonising drummer and a laid-back bassist (literally, he spent most of the set propped up against the wall). Dustball aren't afraid of musical precision and light and shade, either. From the car park, they sounded like early REM. Must have been theRickenbacker." - 'Laidback Gems', Logo magazine "A band who are fucking on fire at the moment." - Drowned in Sound, Live Reveiw (5 out of 5) "Gelled and Jagged - Another Peel favoured bunch of local heroes, but this time they were a lot better than on previous encounters, when I'd tagged them as a good alt-rock band. Now, there new material has gelled and they were picking up a more jagged momentum and an interesting knack for good, dynamic indie rock, the new single is indicative of this new direction and hopefully the new album will be more in the same vein." - Unpeeled review of Dustball at Audioscope 02, The Zodiac, Oxford Websites: www.dustball.co.uk & www.vacuouspop.com This Ain't Vegas: Their sound is influenced by the likes of Gang of Four, Fugazi, Idlewild and Q and not U. This Ain't Vegas released their first single 'Funeral On Tuesday' in July of this year. Three tracks of jerky, angular rock with tempo changes a-plenty. Recommended for fans of Q And Not U and And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. Having only just recently toured the UK with And None Of Them Knew They Were Robots, TAV are about to take their spikey, angular Sunderland-via-DC stylings out on the road again This Ain't Vegas November Tour: 1st - London - The Metro (with Q and not U) 4th - Leeds - Josephs Well (with Q and not U) 26th - Kingston - The Peel (with This Girl) 27th - London - Buffalo Bar 28th - Bath - Purr @ Moles (with Dustball and Cat On Form) 29th - Worcester - Appletree (with The Futureheads) 30th - Leeds - The Fenton (with The Futureheads) "This is f***ing great. The title track rolls along constantly dropping the tempo and building it up again into a forceful and driving chorus with a chord progression that works so well. Think Q and not U with added rock. The two flipside tracks continue where 'Funeral on Tuesday' left off, with '100 mph' bringing it a little Fugazi dexterity in the choppy riffs and dual sung/shouted vocals, along with a few drum fills worthy of any 70's rock giant. 'Ask The Time' even mixes a little blues and groove driven jangle into the rock, all to great effect. Clear vinyl, screened card sleeves, superb music, and they're Sunderland boys too. You've got the lot here." Fracture (on 'Funeral on Tuesday' 7", the bands debut single) "This Ain't Vegas, jerky and angular emo-rockers from Sunderland way, are playing a venue they've played many a time tonite, and as such they take the stage in a relaxed and confident manner. Heck, if you'd penned gems such as '100 mph' and 'Die if you want to', then you'd be in your right to walk on stage and smile smugly for half an hour. To their credit, though, the kids play with all of the energy and vigour that makes them so very special. For in excess of 20 minutes they play discordant indie rock on a knife's edge, much like Idlewild in radio unfriendly mode or the Promise Ring at their guitar torturing finest. They thrill and move me tonight in ample amounts and do nothing to trouble my unashamed love of their very existence. - Drowned In Sound "Occupying a place on a melodic/vitriolic continuum that includes such great unwashed souls as Hüsker Dü, Stony Sleep and, latterly, Jetplane Landing, This Ain_t Vegas take a yammering guitar-line and beat it senseless with feral, exuberant tub-thumping before relaxing into a B-road groove. Given our current predilection for all things snotty this should give This Ain't Vegas the toe-hold they need to develop their sound into something distinctly their own. They're an interesting proposition, watch this space." - Logo Website: www.jealousrecords.com Berkeley: Dynamic 3-piece rock band Berkeley formed in Donegal, Republic of Ireland in January 2001. Their first year was spent writing material for their debut album and playing throughout Ireland. An early decision to find someone who could capture their live sound without any studio trickery was realised in December 2001 when the band travelled to Chicago to record their debut album 'Hope, Prayers & Bubblegum' with the legendary Steve Albini. 15 tracks were recorded and the first release from this session the 'New Star' (Supremo Recordings) 5-track EP will see its UK release on Monday 11th November 2002. The EP is the first instalment from 'Hope, Prayers & Bubblegum' and features two album tracks, 'New Star' and 'Explanations', and three exclusive non-album tracks 'Fallen', 'Whatever You Think Yourself' and 'Motion of Lives'. Upon returning from Chicago, they set about building a reputation for themselves as one of the best live bands in Ireland. They started 2002 well supporting Jimmy Eat World at their debut sell out Dublin show. Since then they have supported a number of visiting International acts including Rival Schools, Sparta, Haven and Jetplane Landing. They appeared at the Witness festival and most recently toured Ireland with The D4. Berkeley are a sonorous hybrid of their influences Fugazi, Nirvana, Radiohead, Idlewild and Jeff Buckley. Their live show is a blast of full-on punk rock energy laced with soul-searching dynamics. The Berkeley manifesto: "Don't just talk or dream about it, do it". Personnel: Tommy McLaughlin, 21 (vocal/guitar) Eugene McGinty, 22 (bass) Hugh Law, 20 (drums) "One after another they churn out manic, thrilling guitar pop. Forget the w*nky indulgent Rawk music that is force fed to us by MTV2, this is pure, it's raw, it's sometime out of tune. Most of all it's fun." - Hot Press (Live Review) "This stunning five-track EP is one of the best releases to emerge from these shores this year. The playing is crisp and precise, Tommy McLaughlin's vocals wringing every last drop of emotion from each song. Spellbinding." - Hot Press ('Single of Fortnight') "They are the new Hüsker Dü." - The Event Guide Websites: www.supremorecordings.com & www.angloplugging.co.uk |
