halloween hootenanny with texas pete, kill van helsing + the viva knievils Latest in our co-operative ventures with Trailer Park Trash and Milk Of Ivy Music is the regular Halloween Hootenanny, this time wit ha surk-garage-rockabilly feel to it. Texas Pete: Sheffield based Texas Pete play rockÕnÕroll, but Texas Pete are distinctive: they make vocal and instrumental surf garage punk music. They formed in summer 2001, and sacked their singer soon after. Since, Texas Pete have adapted, matured and created their own distinctive style, no longer feeling the need to conform to industry standards: the need for vocals on every song. Their chaotic and unpredictable live shows make their gigs a truly visual experience (some claim they are made of elastic), gaining them a substantial following, playing to packed out venues in Sheffield, Hull and Liverpool, Leeds, and most recently taking Manchester by storm. Having played the likes of The Adelphi, Roadhouse, Zanzibar Sheffield Barfly (on the opening night supporting ex-Pavement guitaristÕs new project ÔPreston School of IndustryÕ), The Fuzz Club (supporting ÔThe ParkinsonsÕ) and The Casbah and the Leadmill (supporting The Bellrays). With further UK dates lined up, Texas Pete are hungry for moreÉ Current news: Designers Republic, one the UKÕs premier design companies (Moloko, Supergrass, Pringles and Nickelodeon), have offered to work with the band to design sleeves for forthcoming releases. "Cooler than thou surf punk gods" Ð The Fuzz Club "Local Stars Texas Pete played to a packed house at the brand new Sheffield Barfly ClubÉ sandwiched between some pavement spin-off thing and some rather faceless three-piece indie-rock band, they acquitted themselves rather admirably to say the least. Texas Pete are one of those bands you can just put in front of an unsuspecting crowd and let them entertainÉ no need for hype or reputation or conformity, just pure on the night intrigue, enthusiasm and honest rockÕnÕroll talent." Ð M Hadman: Seen "ItÕs a totally original (these days) sound of skewered rock n roll surf music. With the ÔtwangÕ set to maximum, the sub-violent rawk is accompanied by drainpipe pants and the occasional cowboy hat. It all ends in some frantic body jerking and thrashing of guitars, with the output bizarrely still only reaching Ôheavy twangÕ, but in exciting proportions. Refreshing stuff thatÕs well worth experiencing." Ð Manchester Music "Rather wonderfulÉ Texas Pete play short and sweet energetic instrumental guitar pieces while running about like they are on fire" Ð Sheffield Telegraph "They look like the love-child(ren) of The Pixies and St Trinians but with more leg and lipstick. Sounding like Frank Black and Lou Reed on a good night out after plenty of VodkaÕs. They fall over. A lot. They rock!" Ð M Hadman: Seen "Their promo CDÉ is nothing short of ultra-F.A.B. Texas Pete are unique in that they provide an authentic form of garage surf music, delivered with lo-fi muscle and a bunch of guitars that wish no other existence, than to be made by Fender and strangled through the same manufacturers amps. Texas Pete also wear things like Stetsons and have the straightest, sharpest, narrowest, drainpipe pants ever. As far as this CD is concerned, itÕs different, funny, brilliantly executed, good fun and I canÕt see anyone not liking it. Top marks alone should be awarded for their brilliant ingenuity in making this sound uniquely their own in 2002. Superb." Ð 5/5 Manchester Music Kill Van Helsing: The Cramps with more twangs than fangs. A serious slab of psychobilly, surf and punk, all dressed up and ready to kill. Influenced by The Clash, Johnny Kid and The Pirates and the Stingrays. Now featuring Aqua Vista's ex-bass player. Website: www.visitweb.com/killvanhelsing The Viva Knievils: The Viva Knievils hail from various parts of Wales and came together from several other bands who shared an initial love of the kind of rock and roll coming out of Sweden and Detroit, and labels such as Sympathy For The Record Industry and Estrus. Influenced by bands such as Rocket From The Crypt, Backyard Babies and The Hives, they aim for fiery, punchy pop hits with the emphasis on energy.
