History On The "Beaver" Origination Many years back, "St.Patrick's" named after the local Catholic Church, operated out of the Bellair Municipal Pool. This later became the "Beavers Swim Club". At about the time it was felt that there was a need for a swim club further north (Queensburgh), so an ex teacher from Northdene Primary School got the idea to open up "Queensburgh Swim Club" which operated from the Queensburgh Boys High School. This were I came in. Jim Fountain (who was teaching my eldest son Warren to swim) approached me to help him coach the club swimmers. "Beavers" got wind of this and suggested an amalgamation which duly went ahead and so you have it "Queensburgh Beavers Swim Club". |
Unfortunately Jim left the country and a new full time coach was sought. I did not get the position. I then began to coach privately using the Escombe School Pool. Swimmers in my program were forced to join the Tray Bang Swimming Club based in Montclair, as they were not able to seek membership with "Beavers". |
"Beavers" eventually closed down and by 1994 our Escombe membership was larger than that of Montclair, and so it was decided we were large enough to open up locally. I resuscitated the club. Our first club chairman was Hans Botha (his children Riaan and Lana were high achievers in S A Swimming). As this time two other local coaches were included in the newly formed club. Leonie Ferreira (now CapeTown) and Sandi Goodall (now Dolphins Swim Club). |
The club continues to be blessed with a fine member of swimmers who not only live locally, but travel from Westville, Bluff, Yellowwood Park and Chatsworth. |
