Sir Sidney Robert Nolan (April 22, 1917 - 28 November 1992)

Sir Sidney Nolan was one of Australia's most famous painters. His began his life in the city of Melbourne and later attended the National Gallery Art School. Nolan married a woman called Elizabeth in 1938, however this marriage soon broke up. 

Nolan lived at the 'Reed' family home 'Heide' after his involvement in the army during WW2. He painted some of the pictures from his 'Ned Kelly' series here. During his time at the 'Reed' home, in 1948, he married John Reed's sister, Cynthia. In 1978, Nolan, married Mary Boyd.

Nolan created paintings of historical and legendary figures, including explorers Burke and Wills, and Eliza Fraser. 

His most famous work is the Ned Kelly series. Nolan left the famous 1946-47 Ned Kelly series at Heide after he left. He told Sunday Reed that she could keep all the ones that she wanted however he later went back on his word and demanded them back. Sunday Reed returned 284 other paintings and drawings to Nolan, but she didn't give him the remaining 25 images from the Ned Kelly series, however she later gave them to the National Gallery of Australia in 1977.

In 1950 Nolan moved to London where he remained until he passed away.
