Religion
of

Each
of the countries of Qur-tayn have their own religious views and
typically their own pantheon of dieties. Even within one country, there
will often be separation between the pantheons of various races. The
piety level in curly brackets signifies the level of piety for said race.
See below for descriptions of the piety ratings.

Arkanian Jarls (Frost
Giants) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Fjorm Kardas
was a Jarl hero who lived thousands of years ago. In Jarl
culture, he is credited with initially taming the cunningly
vicious white wolves, which were previously the Jarls' biggest
threat. Devotees of Kardas' Ice domain are rumored to actually
be healed by frost/cold magic. Later, when the roving undead of
Peneloponaea began to head north into the Jarl Steppes, the
mythology of Fjorm Kardas evolved to include legends of his
smiting undead with bright snow-reflected light. |

Silver Dragons, Gloridians & Humans |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
The king or
queen of Zlaghinova is referred to as the Argentum or Argenta,
respectively. The people of Zlaghinova (especially the Silver
Dragons) worship this person as a deity, and in this position,
they do exhibit god-like powers. To achieve this position, a
Silver Dragons must occupy the "Five Places of High
Esteem." These are: 1) trust; 2) healing; 3) excellence; 4)
wisdom; and 5) love.

Gloridians & Humans (especially miners & smiths) |
Lord Adregdonegs ( Akalabeth historian): |
|
Heldegaard
is an ancient Dwarven Goddess, and thus it is no wonder that
metal working and refining has remained an important aspect in
Gloridian culture. Followers of Heldegaard are usually in some
way involved with the mining, refining or working of metal ores,
but rarely wear large symbols representing their patron Goddess.
She teaches that wealth is something one must work hard for, but that
safety should never be sacrificed. |

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Grimbold was
originally a diety from Dwarven mythology, the protector of the
skies. Over the millenia, however, his importance in Dwarven
culture has waned. Since he represents the ocean, winds,
moonlight and strength required to endure the northern storms,
Grimbold has since evolved to be an important holy figure for
the riparian Human communities of NWern Zlaghinova. Prayers are
often made in his name by sailors and fishermen alike but cities
like Lashalle and Airenaeus have impressive processional
ceremonies in Grimbold's name. |

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Maxevrakke is
said to be a friendly god, always willing to help those who work
in his name. As the 'Farmer of the Heavens', he sees to the
fields of wheat in the afterlife and bolsters the food of the
gods. Many festivals and rituals take place in Maxevrakke's name
in Zlaghinova to celebrate or pray for a good harvest. One can
rarely find priests fully devoted to Maxevrakke, however.
Instead, nearly everyone in a farming village will pay homage to
him. |

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Kurnglaaf was
the founder of magical runecasting which can have a number of
useful effects. It has since been developed to the point where
it is almost a religion in itself. The secrets of Kurnglaaf and
the modern day runecasters are as closely guarded as the
Karboten Demi-God of runegates (magical portals), Telegmanae.

Zlaghinovan
Humans & Gloridians (esp. youths) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
This couple
actually existed a couple hundred years ago and have now become
part of the Zlaghinovan mythology. They were young Human lovers
who defied their parents who said they were too young (only 13)
to be together. Bellistara convinced Clareford to run away from
home and they headed east from their mountain home of Hedormel.
From here, their adventures just began, as they found ways of
helping Zlaghinovans in need. Throughout their journeys, the
principle of courageous youth remains a constant theme.
Today, the
stories of Bellistara and Clareford are taught to children to
encourage a sense of justice and service with a healthy tint of
rebellion which young people can strongly relate to. Because of
this, however, open worship of these two as deities is often
looked down upon by the Silver Dragons.

Hatred / Suffering / Undeath |
worshippers: |
|
sentient undead
in the land of Peneloponaea |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Peneloponaea
was an incredibly powerful Karboten mage who lived about 3,500
APA. Her power was so great that she is rumored to have rivalled
the power of the gods. As someone who gave religion little
concern or attention, some of the gods became outraged. The
Phoenix, in particular, challenged her and said that she would
immolate all of Anaptun Abra if her challenge was not accepted.
The proud Peneloponaea, who loved her country dearly, met the
Phoenix in battle north of the Karboten lands and was
annihilated. But her spirit and power were too strong to send
into the afterlife, and her soul remained.
As an
embittered spirit, she tried to return to her homeland and was
chased out by a people who had secretly begged forgiveness of
the Phoenix and promised to forever shun Peneloponaea.
Peneloponaea's already twisted soul transmogrified into a foul
and wicked thing, and now she is but a symbol of hatred and
death, sitting in her country of sentient undead who are also
unwilling to leave this world. They remain behind only to
torture the living who possess what they can never again attain
-- mortality.

worshippers: |

Glenneton
Gnolls (almost all) & Green Dragons (only politically) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Glennere is a
powerful Green Dragon-turned-goddess who created the Gnoll race
long ago in a long-forgotten land.
Glenneton was founded in her name, and all of its people show
fear (if not reverence) to her. Glennere's prime principles are
simple: the strongest stock (physically and/or intellectually)
should breed more, one must work hard for the benefit of the
country, and one must expand the kingdom of Glennere until it
covers the world. |
name: |

Ur-blujinestra

Glenneton
Gnolls & Green Dragons (especially in southern Glenneton) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Since their
unsuccessful attempt to overtake the Jinatrans around 3000 APA,
the Glennetons have increasingly grown to loathe their southern
Gold Dragon neighbors. This hatred has become so strong that a
new set of myths developed of a hero who was able to
single-handedly take down even the oldest Gold Dragons from the
sky. The followers of Ur-blujinestra also head the words of
Glennere, but focus on the eventual southward-assualt on Jinatra. |

Gordohemnian
Blues (but very few) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Little is known
about Sendure, the 'Mad One', mainly because no one has ever
recorded a conversation with one of her followers. The stark
secrecy of the Blues make finding out about this little-known
aspect in their society nearly impossible. I theorize that this
goddess is a means by which the psionically-active Blues can
pray for greater focus and strength in their mental abilities. |

worshippers: |

Anaptun Abra
and Zlaghinovan Karboten, Humans and Gloridians |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
The main
theological mother-figure of the matriarchal Karboten race,
Euphigyanaea is the most commonly prayed-to deity in all of
Anaptun Abra. They say that the blue moon which is always
visible on clear nights is actually the pupil of one of
Euphigyanaea's eyes, constantly looking to see how things are
going. The soft bluish light can "set someone at peace, and
through peace, all wounds may heal. Euphigyanaea shines upon the
night world at rest, and all are renewed." These are the
words of the Karboten priests and priestesses of Euphiguanaea,
who can found in any Anaptun Abra city or village. |

worshippers: |
|
Anaptun Abra
and Zlaghinovan Karboten, Gloridians and Humans |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Lairien was the
original name for the world, as given by the ancient Terran
Gnomes. Many ancient Dwarves (who also lived underground) also
revered the Earth Mother, but now, few remain who do. The
original followers of this kind of earth-mother deity have split
to follow others. The Zlaghinovan Humans who farm now pray to
Maxevrakke, who is said to be one of Lairien's children. The
Zlaghinovan Gloridians who spend more time underground in the
silver and iron mines pray to Heldegaard. The Karboten farmers
tend to favor Gwynarth over Lairien. There are no longer priests
and clerics specific to Lairien within Qur-tayn, but she still
remains a solid part of the Karboten pantheon. |

Karboten |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Though there
are not many who specifically follow the Karboten God of Death,
Okamular, he is an important figure in Karboten figure. The
ritual for sending the soul of the dead into the afterlife is a
long and complicated one in which priests of Okamular will beg
him to escort the spirits away from Peneloponaea's grasp.
Indeed, reverance for Okamular has steadily increased since the
fall of Peneloponaea (3,500 APA) as Karboten dead will often
return to haunt the living under Peneloponaea's control if this
ritual is not performed. |

Karboten (especially farmers & anti-Selentine militia) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Originally an
aspect of Lairien, Gwynarth eventually evolved into a deity in
itself. It is called the Easterly Wind and Stormbringer, and
farmers all across Anaptun Abra pray to it/her/him for the heavy
rains required to begin the growth of the spring crops. Gwynarth
is in many ways similar to the Zlaghinovan deities Maxevrakke
the Harvester and Grimbold the Heavenly Mariner, and I am
currently focusing my research on determining the relationship
these religions have had on each other. |

Anaptun Abra
Karboten barbarians in the Evylfar (Badlands Forest) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Thought
to inhabit Evylfar (Badlands forest), Enkidu is rarely
worshipped. Though not illegal, supplication to Enkidu is
strongly looked down upon in Karboten culture. Still, some
Karboten living in rural areas may give offerings to Enkidu to
ward off roaming beasts. Enkidu is often portrayed as an owlbear,
and may be responsible for the evolution of this breed of beast.
The
Karboten do their best to steer clear of the Evylfar, from which
a great many strange and powerful beasts derive to terrorize the
countryside. 650 APA was a year which saw a great massacre of
Karbotens who rallied together to clear the forest of evil
beasts. None returned.

Karboten (only gatekeepers) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Gnomes have
been intrigued by (and therefore gifted in) magic since the dawn
of time. The Karbotens, who are descendants of the ancient
Terran Gnomes, brought the secret of the runegate with them. (A
runegate is a magical portal through which one may travel
between two places instantly.) This magical 'technology' is
incredibly powerful and would mean disaster if it fell into the
wrong hands. Indeed, the Rakshasas among others are constantly
trying to discover how to make runegates for themselves.
This is where
the followers of Telegmanae come in. Telegmanae was the supposed
inventor of the runegate, and in his name, this secret cult does
their absolute best to protect the runegates.

example of your average Tinker Gnome. Though the Tinker Gnomes
died out many thousands of years ago with the rise of Ko the
White (the spider fatima which was bolstered by the denizens of
the underdark), their patron remains a part of Karboten
mythology. Wizards in general tend not to be interested in the
goings-on of the heavens, but it's not uncommon for a Karboten
mage to thank Gwystol for the success a powerful spell. |

The Gold

deity they revere. Akalabeth Huntravit Kellormenarn was a Gold
Dragon who lived some 15,000 years ago and called together her
Gold Dragon relatives to create the Citidel of Akalabeth. This
citidel is a great tower of a gold-alloy which reaches up miles
into the sky. It is a place of knowledge and learning, and most
of the Gold Dragon population of Qur-tayn lives there.

Murduk Fire
Giants & Red Dragons and Zlaghinovan Gloridians (few) |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
In the lands of
Qur-tayn, the Phoenix is the only known 'fatima'. A fatima is a
living fate, or a mortal deity. The Phoenix does not take shape
and appear to mortals but is of flesh and blood... and fire. No
one knows whether the Phoenix is male or female, and she is
commonly referred to as female. She lives inside an impossible
huge volcano in the middle of Murduk, and is seen emerging every
few days. When she takes to the sky, no Red Dragons can be
found, and it is believed by the Fire Giants that they are her
prey. The Red Dragons, however, revere/fear her as a powerful
creature and avoid her fiery wrath (to which even Red Dragons
are not immune). The
Phoenix was also seen as a patron of the Red Dwarves who lived
far to the west, and the Gloridians, who are their modern
ancestors, still pay her hommage.
The Phoenix
rarely speaks, even to her most devout followers, and thus her
motives are not truly understood. Perhaps she sees herself as
the Justiciar of the Gods, and this may explain her strongy
involvement in heavenly affairs. (see Peneloponaea)

Giants |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
According to
followers of Bistrepid, he was the bastard child of the Phoenix
and a mortal man. He is also thought to be the father of all
Fire Giants, and is highly revered by them. Bistrepid is a god
of conquest, but the Fire Giants prefer to remain near their
geothermally active homeland. Raids in his name are sometimes
made upon the Rakshasa city-state of Shaadi Karke, but the Fire
Giants are easily repelled by the Rakshasa's unmatched magical
ability.
There is some
animosity between the Fire Giant followers of Bistrepid and the
Phoenix, and there appears to have been a gradual shift towards
following Bistrepid. This may, at some point, represent another shift from the Phoenix's followers, again causing its
retribution. (see Peneloponaea)

Yip-rata is
undoubtedly a throwback to the worship of Ko the White some
10,000 years past. The Kobolds (who live under the eastern
mountains of Murduk) only have him to worship. The Kobolds, like
the Jinatrans, also tend to favor arcane magic over divine
magic, however, and Yip-rata tends to play but a minor role in
their society. |

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Is it perhaps
due to the fact that both the Selentines and Karboten claim the
blue moon as their own unique deities which has given rise to
the fierce animosity between these two people. Tinempuaar was
Blue Dragon king of ancient times (6,000 APA) who began a
conquest against the neighboring Copper and Brass Dragons, and
almost caused the two races to be completely wiped out. Upon his
death from old age (he was said to have lived for 10,000 years),
his soul travelled up into the sky and became the blue moon,
which is always looking down upon the Selentine Empire. |

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
A now nearly
forgotten deity, Uugloomaaah was formerly the patron of the
Hobgoblins who occupied the island off the east coast of
Selentia. Since the Hobgoblins were enslaved by the Blue
Dragons, open worship of Uugloomaaah has been all but abolished.
There are still some devout followers of this strange deity
hidden in metropolitan pockets of the Selentine Empire, however,
but the cult's true motives remain unknown.
It is
currently theorized that before their encounter with the Blue
Dragons, the Hobgoblins had in fact been enslaved by this
strange deity and with their lack of sophistication, took
Uuloomaaah as their overlord. No records have been found from
that date (circa 2500 APA), however, and the followers of this
ethos still keep no records even today.

Wymics |
Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
When the Wymics
far southwest of Qur-tayn were abducted by the Rakshasas, they
brought with them their reverence for Watoosee. Watoosee was a
blind Wymic seer whose portents of the future were unmatched.
Hundreds of years after his death, one of his final predictions
came true. "A god-like race of magical beings will come
forth and adbuct us. We must not rebel. We cannot rebel. We will
forever be slaves to these beings but forever be strong."
It is only
because of this that the Rakshasa have allowed the Wymics to
continue their worship. Some Rakshasas, too, who wish to gain
more popular favor, also pay lip service to Watoosee, a man who
was said to have been temperate and wise.

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Followers of
Heptara claim that she created both the Naga and Nagan races,
though my research has found that this is not true. The first
records of Heptara are long after the earliest Naga records
which were collected by their conquerors, the Rakshasas. It is
also rumored that she is a living goddess, who travels between
the Vigoorian Nagan cities, but this is also probably not true.
It is ironic
(to say the least) that this goddess represents charisma and is
followed by one of Qur-tayn's least charismatic people. Little
else is really known about the inner workings and politics of
this deity, as her followers are xenophobic in the extreme and
rarely accompany trade expeditions along the sealines.

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Bleg-h was a
Troll hero who discovered the use of weapons. In a great battle
long ago, his arm was chopped off in combat with a group of
strange humanoid creatures. His normal attacks could not
penetrate the army of his assailants and so he picked up his
detached left arm and flailed about with it wildly until they
had been beaten into a pulp.
This is not
the kind of legend the Black Dragons want the Vigoorian Trolls
to follow, as it encourages them to abandon all attempts at
using tactics on the battlefield. Nonetheless, if you're a
Troll, this is quite an effective tactic.

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Almarus is the
Bronze Dragon god of the seas, and was almost immediately
adopted by the Locathah's when these two races met milennia ago.
Since that time, however, the portfolio of this god has changed
to include trade, which the Almaroons have used to become a
strong nation. Almarus is said to look upon the world as a hobby
by his followers, and rarely chooses to intercede in the affairs
of human- and dragon-kind. That said, one should be wary of the
power of an Almarus priest defending his ship on the high seas. |

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
Nanatsu
Ikazuchi is currently the prime deity in Konimaru, a land with a
history which dwarfs that of Qur-Tayn. Hundreds of gods and
goddesses have disappeared throughout the history of Konimaru,
apparently, and only three remain. Prayers to Nanatsu Ikazuchi
are made during the course of any ceremony, and being a
ritualistic people, one might hear His name a hundred times in a
day. Priests of Nanatsu Ikazuchi hold the highest political
positions in Kenku communities, and all of their efforts are
aimed at securing a place in Konimaru for future Kenku
generations -- often through offensive measures against the
Konsetsuborra (Eastern Demons). |

with Almaroon to their west, and heals those ravaged by
Konsetuborra attacks at home. Healers tend to revere Nishi Haru
above even Nanatsu Ikazuchi, but the highly structured
theological community of the Kenkus teaches that Nanatsu
Ikazuchi's powers are greater. |

Lord Adregdonegs (Akalabeth historian): |
|
One of the most
common Konsetsuborra (Eastern Demons) in Konimaru is the Peryton,
a large black-feathered eagle with a purple stag head. These are
creatures of pure malice, and they only feast upon the hearts of
sentient beings. Shika Oyadama was, in fact, a Peryton some
10,000 years ago, but unlike her demonic kin, she turned from
the path of corruption and began to fight with the Kenku and
Aarakocra against the other Konsetsuborra. It is believed that
when Shika Oyadama ascended into the heavens, Nanatsu Ikazuchi
(the Seven Thunders) granted her with the powers of fire, and
sent her to continue in the fight against the Eastern Demons
plaguing Konimaru since the dawn of time. |

Totems are
often carved of Aakrotacca of the various fine trees to be found
in Konimaru. Redwood and cedar are the preferred brands of wood
because of their rich color and fresh spring-like scent,
respectively. These totems are crafted to closely resemble an
Aarakocran mother defending her egg-full nest. Among
Aakrotacca's teachings, the strongest principles are that of
good and unity -- "as a family works together through
adversity, so must all beings word together to overcome
adversity." In this respect, Aakrotacca acts as a voice of
hope for the Aarakocra, who are on the brink of
extinction. |

Totem
representations of Torcca are almost only made from dark woods
like ebony, walnut, oak or mahogany. In other forms of art, he
is often portrayed as a black-feathered Aarakocra with an oversized
beak. A set of bas relief tablets are in the Citidel's
collection depicting Torcca facing a group of famous Aarakocran
heroes who have just died -- they are walking toward Torcca who
has beams of darkness eminating from his mouth. (At this time,
unfortunately, no other details are known about this deity.) |
