| American Eskimo: The Dog Beautiful The American Eskimo Dog presents a picture of strength and agility, alertness and beauty, which is why the American Eskimo Dog is also called "the dog beautiful." The American Eskimo is nicknamed "Eskie." The Eskie is a spitz type dog; Pomeranian, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Chow Chow, Keeshond, and Samoyed are just a few of the Spitz family. The United Kennel Club (UKC) first recognized the breed in 1913. It is classified and belongs to the AKC Non-Sporting Group. As most spitzes, the Eskie carries its tail curled up on its back; it has a double-coat, which requires regular brushing, that makes it adaptable to all weather although it might prefer a cooler place. It needs minimal bathing as it does not have a "doggy odor." The Eskie, loving companion and excellent watchdog, is a determined dog that is eager to please and learns new tasks quickly. It is alert and friendly although slightly conservative. It is protective of its home and family. The Eskie is good with other pets, specially with other Eskies, and children if properly socialized. The Eskie is very smart, loyal, and affectionate. The Eskie lifespan ranges from 12 to 15 years.
