Thanadaeco's Weyr
Back to the Fosters List
My name is Than, Thanadaeco really, but you can call me Than.
My twin sister
Kyani and I have been Searched at Istabitha's Weyr and both of us are really excited about it.

Let me tell you about myself, okay?
I'm 16 turns old, my mother really is Mama Tani. (You can see my physical description
here.) I like hunting and chasing creatures, but I only kill when we need the meat or the leather. I've been training in Leather Craft (as a Jr Apprentice) so I have a good idea about how to use the hides of the animals I hunt. I'm not a good cook, though, so all the meat goes to Mama.

I love to lounge around on a good fur blanket, and I love fireplaces, watching glows sparkle, and looking at the great dragons hunting from above.

Someday I wish I could do that, riding a dragon over a wherry pack and feeling through his connection to me as he dives! Wow! Just thinking about flying makes me tingly.

As for what kind of Dragon? Well, Kyani thinks that I'm a good worker but I'm not a leader type, so she says a Brown would suit me best. I think she's right. I wonder what she might Impress?

Well, I have some work to do, clean out the runner's stable and start working on my latest hide. I'll see you soon!

When I do Impress, I've already been invited to join a wing at the Protectorate! Isn't that cool?
It was a hard day. The runners had trampled a fence that one of the helpers was putting up, and nearly trampled the poor man too.

Thanadaeco and several other Fosterlings ran to help, but the runners were so much faster...

"Wouldn't it be great if we could call them like you could call a dragon?" Than muttered to his sister. She grunted.

"It would but then dragons wouldn't be so special would they?"

They plodded along following the muddy hoof prints of the runner they chased. He was a long-legged one, a sprinter. Great.

Just when they thought they caught sight of the beast, it spooked. The runner bolted off into the hillside, and they could both hear a whinny of fear from it.

Kyani grasped her brother's shoulder. "Look, that's what's spooked him!"

It was a dragon! Appeared in the sky, probably the moment the steed bolted!

Both siblings stood there in awe, as the bronze descended. Was he really coming down right in front of the pair? That's what it looked like!

"He's huge," Than whispered. "What's he doing here?"

"I don't know..." Kyani whispered back, for once in awe and unable to give a quip back.

The rider finally jumped down and then... The pair of fosterlings noticed that a white dragon had also landed!

"That's... new," Kyani said.

The rider strode right up to the pair and smiled widely. "You're the ones, aren't you! Well, my Search is over today!"

He looked like he was almost going to turn and leave without explaining anything, when he spun and laughed. "Oh, sorry! I'm B'nir,
Istabitha's searchrider. If you gather your things, we can head directly to the weyr."

"Istabitha," Thanadaeco said, "that's not very close to here, is it?"

"It's as close as dragonback," the rider said.

"Well let's GO!" Kyani said, excitedly. "We've been waiting for this for so long! Oh! I'm Kyani, and this is my brother Thanadaeco, but you can call him Than."

"Than, Kyani," B'nir nodded and gave them a dragonrider's salute.

"We'll be right back!" Than said, over his shoulder, as they ran to tell Mama Tani about their Search!
Thanadaeco watched the sands with interest. Every day he was there, peeking around the huge stone doorway but rarely letting himself be seen. He could feel the eggs there, becoming harder and more mature every sevenday.

Then, he felt something. It wasn't just him, either, there were others who felt the dragons stirring. They all split up and started running about the weyr like wherries with their heads lopped off! He darted into the room he shared with his sister Kyani!

He told her of their imminent hatching, and naturally she didn't believe him until the blast of a dragon's bugle shattered the silence around the weyr.

They bolted, and then attended a fine hatching! Bets were exchanged when the first to hatch was a bronze, going to that harper that Kyani liked to look at. Than knew the guy loved to look at her too, so they might make a nice pair some day. Well, those thoughts were muddled a bit when his sister
impressed a blue!

No pairing because of a flight for them, he thought!

But then he waited. There were three browns who hatched, two of them impressing female candidates! Than was kind of amazed by that, but then he ... noticed that he was the only candidate left on the sand.

Worried he cast about, and then saw that there was in fact only one more egg left.

Almost alone, but with all the eyes of the weyr (all save his sister and the other weyrlings who had impressed) on him, he watched the lone egg. It was small, and the dragon which rolled from it as it hatched was also very small.

White! Most of it was white! But this one had violet back legs, and a beautiful diamond of black on his forehead! A rare! Very very rare! He moved forward, his normal grace eluding him.

The dragon almost grinned at him, bespeaking in a soft warm voice that Than' knew already:
Deakoth, I am Deakoth.

Than' spoke only the word, again and again, as he took the white rare dragon into his arms.
It has not taken long for the hatchlings to grow! Istabitha's Weyr is filled with yearling dragons, and Deakoth is among them. He makes his mark not only by being a very odd color, but by seeming to understand the ins and outs of betweening, thread fighting, and most importantly to his rider, he understood people.

Already, the three-colored dragon had sniffed out two Candidates for the hatchings, and he seemed to want to do more!

Kyani insisted that they remain close, even when she and Yrainth were moved from the barracks into a more adult single weyr. Than' was next!

Please can't we visit Kyani? I think Yrainth has gone fishing!

They
did, but then returned to their own weyr.

When they had completed a flight exersize, Deakoth trumpeted and was answered by a smallish brown who rested atop the weyr's heights.

I wonder what they want?
Than' bespoke.

To find out what they did want, move
on!
