The Unsmiling Man A vice-like grip, Cold and bland. He smiled but his eyes betrayed, A mask of unfriendliness I wish I hadn't stayed.
As the night wore on it became clear to me, He was a sly old fox of a man, Who would take more than he would give readily.
He charmed the old dears from his library chair, Showed them books which he took down from here and there, In the firelight their jewels sparkled and danced, I knew he was watching me to, waiting for his chance.
Like a vampire he seemed to be sucking them in, As they laughed coyly, he topped up their gin, I shivered at the thought of deceit and decay, Knew he was charming me to with his way.
Dinner was called and we followed him in, Although I tried to avoid it, I ended up next to him. He watched me all the time out of one eye, I pretended not to notice and prayed time would slip by.
After dinner and dancing it was time to go, Out into the night away from my foe, I realized that I was the last to leave, the panic started to rise, I couldn't breathe.
Soon it was just he and I, He moved swiftly closer, Blocking my exit as I tried to slip by.
I reached for the door handle and everything went black, I felt his presence so near me, his hand on my back. He closed in on his prey; I tried to flee, But as his mouth touched mine it felt so heavenly, I had surrendered to the devil the vampire of the night, The unsmiling man became my knight… ©Rachel Innes 2001
