Goblin,  go to Gamers.com to see the D&D3e Goblin in their MM report.
Goblins are small, numerous, evil beings that are featured in nearly every campaign. They are the most common monster along with Orcs and Ogres. Goblins have pointy teeth and ears, their skin ranges from yellow to orange to red. While their eyes are either yellow or red. High numbers are the source of the Goblin's false bravado; false because a Goblin usually flees if it is even slightly outnumbered. Their chief is the secondary source of bravery to the tribe/army, if slain the Goblins quickly lose their will to fight; especially if the leader is not a Goblin. The social system of Goblins is one where fighting the higher ranked Goblin above you and winning moves you up the ladder. A Goblin chief is most often a stronger and a more intelligent individual, thus he is feared and or respected by the rest. Goblins can commonly be found serving Hobgoblins, Orcs, Drow and most other Underdark races as slaves. Hobgoblins and Orcs though will usually use them in war parties/armies as they make effective troops when in large numbers and especially if mounted on wolves or worgs. Goblins are more at home in subterranean locations, so sunlight/light spells are painful for them, as are Dwarves, Gnomes and other races that despise Goblins.

Hobgoblingo to Gamers.com to see the D&D3e Hobgoblin in their MM report.
Not suffering from the same ill effects as Goblins (lack of will, strength and intelligence), Hobgoblins are intelligent and make excellent fighters. Due to being more intelligent they make a more effective fighting force and do not flee from battle. Physically Hobgoblins are larger and stronger than their Goblins cousins; just as strong as Humans and Dwarves. They do share two things in common with Goblins those being, able to move silently and agile; no Hobgoblin would admit such a similarity. The have hides colored anywhere from dark gray to red browns. Their faces though are dark red to red orange, and the larger males have blue or red noses. Hobgoblins keep good care of their armour and weaponry. Their armies are just as well kept and organized, they bear standards and have regimented forces. It is not odd to see a Hobgoblin leading Orcs or Goblins into battle or Hobgoblins working under Orcs or Gnolls. Hobgoblins are known for their battle prowness and could benefit any army. Elves are a blood enemy of Hobgoblins and Hobgoblins will not think twice about killing an Elf on sight.

Orc,  go to Gamers.com to see the D&D3e Orc in their MM report.
Another common enemy for a group of regular PC's out for a stroll. Orcs are numerous like Goblins but far more vicious fighters. Orcs are driven to expand their territory through any means necessary. For the most part Orcs are greedy barbaric conquerors but some choose other less savage paths. Orc war parties are very common and rarely remain idle for long. They have been known to resort to fighting eachother intimes of boredom. They battle Humans, Dwarves, Elves even Goblins and other Orcish tribes for territory and treasure. In comparison to Hobgoblins, their armies are not as regimented and tend to be heavy assaults with little strategy. Their green skinned appearance, large teeth and berserking nature make them a wicked sight. Orcs have a snout instead of a nose along with a stooped posture and forehead. Their eyes have a reddish tinge giving them a bloodthirsty look. Orcs are known to have cross bred with other species producing Orogs, Ogrillions and Half Orcs. Half-Orcs can be found living in Human cities or with Orc tribes, depending on which parent they were brought up with. Slavery is part of Orcish lifestyle either taking slaves or being slaves.

Bugbear,  go to Gamers.com to see the D&D3e Bugbear in their MM report. Some concept art.
A giant ugly hairy race with only treasure and "eating tomorrow" on their minds, Bugbears are lesser known goblinoids. Smarter than Goblins but just as evil and corrupt they can be found among some Goblin/Hobgoblin/Orc armies serving as heavy infantry. They are not known to excel at much else other than eating and killing, despite their average intelligence. Bugbears have long teeth and triangular wedged shaped ears. The nose of the Bugbear is it's namesake along with a drunk dwarf. Tactical skills are not on the mind of the usual Bugbear. The ambush has been set in stone as the preferred means of attack. A side note, some Bugbears have been known to eat disobedient Goblins now and then...

Gnoll,  go to Gamers.com to see the D&D3e Gnoll in their MM report.
Hyena-like and large sums up a Gnoll nicely. While humanoid in form their features are all hyena. Gnolls are bipedal and have greenish gray skin with spotted brown fur and a darker muzzle. They also have a thick mane on their necks which is red gray to dull yellow. Like Goblins their use high numbers in an attempt to overwhelm an enemy. They are not fond of work and prefer to search for loot. Gnolls are ruled by the strongest, who use fear as control over the rest. Working with Ogres, Trolls, Hobgoblins, Bugbears and Orcs is common for Gnolls while they dislike Goblins, Kobolds, Humans and Giants. Gnolls look for physical strength and skill in an ally not intelligence. Referred to as a "Goblinoid" race in the
Dark Elf Trilogy.
