This is a view of Auckland looking out toward the eastern bays. Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand. Over 1,000,000 people live amoungst its volcanic cones and along its coasteline. The Island in the background (left) of the picture is one of the finest examples of a near circular Volcanic Island "Rangototo". The Hauraki Gulf is dotted with many Islands, large and small. Auckland is known as "The City of Sails". New Zealanders love the sea and on a summers day Auckland is a mass of sails out on the Harbour. The America's Cup will be held here in 2000! And sadly the greenpeace flag ship "The RainBow Warrior" was sunk by French Terrorists (skulking in our waters in rubber suits "frogmen") using explosives in the early 80's. (Obviously the French didn't like the fact that Greenpeace were rather vocal about the french passion for Nuclear BOMBS ! ! !) Thank God the French didn't use a nuclear device to sink the "Warrior", or this beautiful city may not be so beautiful today.
WELLINGTON
Wellington, The capital city of New Zealand. Most head offices of business are located here. As well as being the seat of New Zealands Government Wellington is known for the arts, Te Papa (National Museum - for all New Zealanders) and its wind! The cable car seen here is popular with tourists as it affords a good view of the habour and the botanical gardens at the top of the ride are reported to be world class. Wellington is a great place for night life. The city is farely compact and there are bars and cafes everywhere. The habour is one of the best in New Zealand by day and night. You can catch one of the many ferries here to the "Sounds" at the top of the South Island.
