The Javan Rhinoceros

Scientific Name and Origin
- Rhinoceros sondaicus
- Rhinoceros: from the Greek rhino, meaning "nose" and ceros, meaning "horn"
- sondaicus: referring to the Sunda islands in Indonesia. (Latin -icus indicates a locality); "Sunda" means "Java"
Habitat
- Lowland tropical rainforest
Historical Distribution
- Malaya, Burma, Thailand, Indochina, Java, Sumatra, Northern India
Current Distribution and Numbers
- Ujung Kulon National Park on the island of Java in Indonesia (40 - 60 rhino surviving)
- Cat Loc Nature Reserve in Vietnam (10-15 rhino surviving)
- Captive: none
Size
- 2,000 - 3,000 lbs (900 - 1,400 kg)
- 5 - 5.5 ft (1.5 - 1.7 m) tall at shoulder
- Single horn 10 in (25 cm) long
Physical Description
- Gray, hairless; lesser, but still apparent, armor plating
- One horn
Life History Characteristics
- Generally solitary except for mothers and young or mating pairs
- Mostly a browser, but will graze
- Females sexually mature at 3 to 4 years of age; males at 6 years
- Gestation period approximately 16 months; interbirth interval of
- one calf every 4 to 5 years
- Life span approximately 35 to 40 years
