Also known as "Green-tailed Parrot Finch" and "Tawny-breasted Parrot Finch".

DISTRIBUTION

Malay archipelago.


DESCRIPTION

Black forehead, deep blue crown. Tan face, breast and underparts. The back is bright green as are the wings. The upper-tail coverts are tan changing to green to the tip of the tail. The beak is black. The hen is similar but the colours are slightly duller.

HABITAT

Forest and bamboo jungle. Also open clearings and edges. It prefers higher altitudes usually between 1000 and 3000 meters. Some races do occurr at lower altitude.


BEHAVIOUR

Social bird, similar in behavior to the Pin-tailed Parrot Finch. Arboreal bird that spends most of its time in the forest canopy.


DIET

Its diet comprises mostly of the seeds of bamboo, rice and grasses. Also eats small fruits and occasionally takes insects.
