DISTRIBUTION
The islands of the Fijian archipelago.
Closely related to the Royal Parrot Finch. Listed by some
(together with the Royal Parrot Finch) as a subspecies of
Erythrura cyaneovirens.
HABITAT
Forest clearings and edges. Has adapted well to the effects of
human habitation and can found in cultivated areas and gardens.
BEHAVIOUR
Normally seen in pairs or small groups, sometimes in larger groups
in rice cultivations.
DIET
Its diet comprises mostly of the seeds of grasses and herbaceous
plants. Where available, rice has become a basic food. They also
eat insects, spiders and larvae.
DESCRIPTION
Robust, short-tailed parrot finch. Green back, wings and
underparts. Deep red head and tail, indigo blue chin fading
and blending on the breast with the green of the body.
The normally breed in mid summer with their nests located among
dense foliage of trees. They build globular nests out of grass stems
and other fibrous material.
