Also known as "Mount Katanglad Parrot Finch" and "Red-eared Parrot Finch".

DISTRIBUTION

Found only on Mount Katanglad in the Philippine island of Mindanao.




DESCRIPTION

Small parrot finch with unusually long legs. Basic green body with bright red tail. Blue face with distinctive crescent shaped red markings behind the eyes. The hen is similar but with less bright and defined red on the ears. The hen's colours darken with age.

HABITAT

Found on the mountain slopes of Mount Katanglad up to 1600 m above sea level. They are usually seen at forest edges and clearings in mountain valleys. They appear to roost at night deep into the forest and congragate in flocks near the edges in the evenings.


BEHAVIOUR

They are less active than other members of their genus and spend a good deal of time foraging on or near the ground.


DIET

Their diet consists mostly of the seeds of grasses and bamboos but insects are also taken.
