BIRDING IN TAIWAN

Upper Elevation Conifer Forest

Hohuanshan
Danda Trail, Nantou

This habitat is usually found between 2,000 and 3,000 meters in elevation. The forest here consist mostly of conifers, and there may be snowfall during cold months. The diversity of bird life here is slightly less than that of mid-altitude mixed forests, but a number of species are found only in this habitat or higher. The trails around Hohuanshan and Tayuling provide easy access to this habitat, as do trails at Anmashan, near Big Snow Mountain, and Tsuyuan on the Ilan branch of the Central Cross-island Highway. The best season for birding in this habitat is probably spring or summer, though different seasons provide a different birding atmosphere for all forested habitats.
