Pitcher plants Nepenthes veitchii

pitcher

The alien beauty of pitcher plants belies their dark secret - they are carnivores! Small insects attracted to secretions from the plant fall into the liquid-filled cup and are unable to escape. In time, they are digested. This manner of acquiring supplemental nutrients allows pitcher plants to thrife in extreme habitats such as mountain tops or the very sandy soil of Kerangas forest.
