Scarus rubroviolaceus, Male Parrotfishes are one of the most conspicuous elements of the coral reef community. They are characterised by bright color patterns that go through a series of rather dramatic changes during the life cycle. Juveniles and females generally have relatively drab coloration. |
Mature females are capable of
transformation to the male sex and during this process
undergo a remarkable color change. Males typically exhibit bright color combinations of red, pink, blue and green. Parrotfishes derive their common name from the fused jaw teeth that are reminiscent of a parrots beak. However a few species have separate teeth. |
