Scarus rubroviolaceus, Male
Blue Parrotfish

Parrotfishes are one of the most conspicuous elements of the coral reef community. They are characterised by bright color patterns that go through a series of rather dramatic changes during the life cycle. Juveniles and females generally have relatively drab coloration.

Mature females are capable of transformation to the male sex and during this process undergo a remarkable color change.

Males typically exhibit bright color combinations of red, pink, blue and green.

Parrotfishes derive their common name from the fused jaw teeth that are reminiscent of a parrots beak. However a few species have separate teeth.
