SOUTH AFRICA TRIP REPORT (INFO)
By David Fischer of Wollongong, Australia.

Selected Information about the trip.  March 12 - March 15 '97

ACCOMODATION

All amounts are in South African Rands (R)

Witbank caravan park charged R45 for three persons.

Weaver's Nest Guest House should be booked in advance. It was an excellent place to stay with full board available. The owners will organise a bird guide upon request. We were charged R100 per person per night for camping on the grounds and this included an excellent dinner.

Kruger National Park requires advance bookings particularly for the southern camps. Costs ranged from R45 to R75 for powered campsites for 3 persons. All of the camps that we visited had a restaurant, a store where food could be purchased, and covered camp kitchens with gas stoves and boiling water. The park was clean and well maintained. Night drives should be booked in advance (R45 per person). Kruger is a huge park (415 km drive from Crocodile Bridge Gate to Pafuri Gate) and speed limits are low (50km/h) so plenty of time should be set aside for exploring this natural wonder. I had no trouble with campsite/nightdrive availability when making our bookings 6 months in advance.

Ben Lavin Nature Reserve - R45 per night.

Nylsvlei Nature Reserve - A small campground is available if booked in advance. Facilities were basic, but birding is excellent.
