Lao countryside. The thached houses you see in this picture are typical of those we saw in Laos on our ride from Vientiane to the Chinese border. They are ususally built on stilts to avoid flooding and keep away rats and other animals. A man in Vang Viang told me that it takes people about one week to build one of these houses, and they usually last 2-3 years until they have to be replaced.
Everywhere we went in Laos, the kids were thrilled to see us. They would shout 'hello' in Lao from their courtyards as we rode by, or, if we stopped, they would all gather around us like in this picture, and watch our every move. The kids were, for Ed and I, one of the highlights of Laos.
Two Lao girls who ran out of their yard to greet us and watch us ride by.
