The True Ashram

MANY SEEKERS from far and near were in the habit of visiting an ashram where they had been told there was great spiritual blessing to be received.

Some came and went away satisfied without knowing why; and some of these asked themselves why they were satisfied, and some did not ask. Others came and did not know whether they had received anything new or not but went away gratefully. Some came expecting to experience miracles and see spiritual fireworks and returned disappointed. Some came without expecting anything at all and were delighted when they experienced something miraculous.

For some, a small change in their feature that they could observe or a reinvigoration of their wish to search, or the discovery that they had lost some lurking fears which had burdened them for many years was a miracle.

For others only a full scale vision would suffice. Those who came seeking what they wanted, either received what they came: – which might be nothing worthwhile – or went away denouncing the ashram as a fraud.

Others who came, not because they knew what they wanted, but because they were aware that they needed something they lacked – they did not know quite what – were often delighted with what they received.

But none of them received anything more than what they were able to receive. And the most profound truth they took away with them from the ashram was that the true ashram was within themselves.
