Violent Femmes Live at the Metro

H.P.K.:

Violent Femmes.

Came out onto the stage looking old, fat and bored. Stayed that way for a good half hour, even slowing down the tempo of their songs so as not to require too much animation. Things weren't looking good. Then all of a sudden a token guitarist came on along with the "Horns of Dillema" (playing so quietly it was hard to discern whether anything even close to slight ruccus broke out let alone dillema) and I think that spurred the old tackers into action. Boom, all of a sudden it's not just Victor Delorenzo getting into it, but big Brian Ritchie's starting to bust some chops, and eventually, Gordie even throws in a bit of banter and a Slim Dusty song to boot. I think after Gordon's single guitar solo of the night was over he loosened up a bit. Must've been the nerves building up there or something. Seriously, the guy just never solos, it's all Brian Ritchie bass solos (but not those boring prog-rock bass solos).

Special note should also be mentioned of the crowd. True we were up the back in the bleachers so you've gotta expect it, but geez it was like aging couples night up there. Of course Blister in the Sun and Kiss Off went down a treat. I especially liked the irony of everyone singing "Come on dad give me the car", when by the average age, most of the people would these days be saying to their kid, 'no you can't have the car you little mongrel'.

Aaaaah age, so easy to mock.
