I've got a triple play ROH this morning -
First of all - A Mighty Wind.
Given my fondness for all things Spinal Tap and related, a RATE! was pretty much a lock for me on this one whether it sucked or not. I have to say that it didn't suck as everyone expected it might. Definitely not as funny as This is Spinal Tap or Waiting for Guffman but better than Best in Show (which I think is actually pretty over-rated). There's some pretty funny dialogue (mainly from Guest, McKean and Shearer) but it is kinda disappointing that the characters are not as stupid as you would expect them to be. There are too many characters in the movie though, with no real focus on anyone in particular, so there is a lack continuity. More focus on The Folksmen would have been good but I guess it would have just become a folk-y version of Spinal Tap. And Eugene Levy's character wears a bit thin after a while but surprisingly he can actually write a decent song.
Songs are pretty good, with stupid lyrics (like the one about the wanderer who's never actually been anywhere) and the big concert at the end is actually pretty cool when you realise that it's all recorded live and everyone is playing their own instruments (the guys from Tap are actually pretty good musicians).
No points for guessing it's a RATE! from me.
The soundtrack gets a RATE! too if only for The Folksmen's version of "Start Me Up".
Second - Sex And Lucia.
Went to see this the other night. A Spanish film in which people drop their gear at random points on the movie for no real reason.
Lucia falls in a hole early on in the movie and I spent the rest of the movie trying to work out how she got out. People get their gear off then a guy covered in mud has an erection. More gear off then you find out what actually happened and everyone slept with everyone else at some point of time. I still don't know how the chick got out of the hole.
Rating: HATE!
Third - Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
Not the movie but the book. All I have to say about this one is that if it's a true story then it's a really cool autobiography. If it's a piece of fiction then it's just a really cool story. I read this one from beginning to end in a day (it was a pretty boring shift at work) and didn't lose interest so it must have been good. Keen to see the movie now as it could prove rather interesting.
