Well I taped an Artsy Fartsy movie on Sunday night and watched it last night. Let me just say there was very, very little in the way of Fartsy...
The Movie?
Persona.
The Director?
Ingmar Bergman.
The Plot?
A nutbag actress accompanied by her nurse heads out to a seaside cottage to restore her sanity.
The Best Bits?
- The film declaring its artsiness right from word go with a montage of nonsensical images (well nonsensical to everyone bar the most long white bearded academics).
- Just when you get to the point of forgetting its artsiness the film litearally breaks up and gives you about a minute of nonsensical images again.
- The black and white is the nicest looking black and white I can remember seeing in an old movie (but then again '66 aint that old). Very much in contrast to the murk and dank that accompanies most old b&w films... I can't wait for the colourisation of this one.
- I learned that 'bon' is the word for child in Swedish. I think the word for grandchild is 'bon bon'. Ain't that cute.
The meaning?
Who the hell knows??? On one viewing I thought maybe it was the old 2 people who are actually one person trick was being played a'la Fight Club and some other movie I saw recently but can't remember (although back when this movie was made '66 I dont think this was an old trick). But I'm about as sure as this as I am of the Earth's core actually being made up of molten chocolate. I wandered around the internet for a while looking for a nice concise explanation of what it all meant. All to no avail. A few of the more interesting ones included such phrases as "psychodyke genre" and "In conclusion, this movie is obviously the work of a man with a far greater intellect than mine". So opinions were all over the place. The more specific they got the more they sounded like complete speculation.
The rating?
Work out for yourself whether I RATE! this one or not.
