The real test of a movie for mine is seeing it twice. First up, Bridget Jones’s Diary. I liked this the first time around, but the second time it just got on my nerves. My first problem. I know she was supposed to smoke too much, but I can’t help but seriously question the huge role the humble cigarette took in this film. I mean, it wasn’t enough that people would have a smoke in their hand (which would be understandable, you smoke and that’s what you do), but do smokers really keep every cigarette they puff away on as close to their face as possible at all times? For the benefit of their eye sight, I would think not. I’m surprised British Tobacco didn’t get top billing. To sum up my first prob: people don’t just blatantly smoke in the movie, they blatantly smoke in frame (close up or otherwise).
Second problem: Nobody who’s that socially inept and pathetic gets laid that much... Well at least nobody I know.
All up though, I’m still ok with this movie, though give it a third time and it’ll be out the door.
Next up: Lost in Translation. I dunno whether you’re going to see this or not Parkesy, but I’m going to spoil it for you...Maybe. I’m just so very very relieved that Bill Murray and the rather spunky Scarlet Johanson didn’t get it on. I’d actually like to see it again so then I can watch it without thinking ‘jeez I hope they don’t get it on’ every 5 minutes. That’d definitely improve the experience for mine. But yeah, all in all a deceptively strange movie. It sets up all these issues and difficulties in the two people’s lives, yet they never even come close to resolving anything. Hell, they hardly even talk about it. I actually think this is a good thing, gives it a kind of realism... Anyway, this movie has everything I like about a movie. Nothing much happening. A cynical outlook on life. Young chicks not getting it on with older guys (the reverse of which being a serious hollywood hatred of mine). A couple of shots for boom spotters. And a farking killer soundtrack. Of course one lady leaving the cinema was heard saying, ‘well at least you got to see what Tokyo looks like’. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
