The Schaub Family

    Immigrant: Johann Christoph      Origins: Switzerland
    Immigration date: 1833           Occupation: Farmer
    Religion: Reformed?
    Relationship: My 3rd great grandfather

The Schaub family originated in Switzerland, around Langenbruch, Canton Basel. The earliest known ancestor from my line is Rudolph Schaub, born 1610 in Langenbruch. He had 3 children, Matthias I, Hans Jacob, and Hans Martin. Hans Martin and his sons were all weavers in Drachenbronn Alsace by the late 1600's.

By the 1660's, Matthias I and his wife Ursula had moved to Alsace, and then on to Rumbach, Germany close to the Alsace border. The Schaub's were among many swiss families who emigrated to Rumbach after the Thirty Years War (1618-48) decimated most of the population.

Rumbach is a small mountainous village, and over the years, families tended to inter-marry frequently. This tradition carried over even after emigration to the U.S., as many families from Rumbach settled in Monroe County , OH and some continued to inter-marry there. Some of these family names (from my line) include: Bintz, Jaggi/Jacky/Yockey, Goerthler, Loescher, Neuhart (ancestors to Bob Newhart!), Kochert, Kindelberger, Schaub, and Stoehr.

The first Schaub from Rumbach to emigrate to the U.S. was Christoph Schaub, (born 1702) a grandchild of Matthias I. Christoph arrived in Philadelphia on 26 Sept, 1737 on the St. Andrew Galley. The next group arrived in the early 1830's and settled in Monroe County, OH. They included: George Jacob Schaub (widower of Anna Margaret Bintz) who arrived in NY 14 July 1831, with several children, one of whom was Mary Katherine, born 1805. George Jacob was a grand nephew of Johannes who emigrated in 1737.

Another related family was Johann Christoph Schaub and Anna Maria Jacky, who arrived about 1831. They also brought 5 children (all born in Rumbach):

  * Phillip Jacob(1808-1891) married Mary Katherine Schaub (cous.)
  * Margaretha
  * Lorenz (1810-1871) married Catherine Feldner
  * Heinrich (1812-1886) married Louise Weber moved to Iowa
  * Frederick (1818)

Children of Phillip Jacob Schaub and Mary Katherine Schaub:

  * Mary(1834-1891)		married Jacob Stoehr
  * Phebee (1836-) married Frederick Schaub
  * Phillip Jr. (1838-1926)	never married, Civil War veteran
  * Caroline (1840-?)		married 1)Robert Hodge   2)____ Scott
  * Dora (1847-1925)		married William F. Delbrugge

This family appears in the 1850 and 1860 Monroe Co. OH census. Phillip and Katherine eventually moved to Hancock Co.,IN where they stayed and farmed for the rest of their lives. Their son Phillip Jr. also moved with them, after being wounded in the Civil War. Phillip and Katherine's daughter Mary and her husband Jacob Stoehr also moved to Hancock County. They were all listed in the 1870 and 1880 Hancock Co. census. Daughter Dora Schaub Delbrugge lived in Indianapolis, a short distance away.

Phillip Sr.'s father Johann Christoph Schaub only stayed in Monroe County a short time. His wife Anna Maria died(?) by 1849 and he then moved to Johnson Co., IA where he married Hannah Wieneke in Iowa City in Dec 1849. His other son Heinrich and his wife Louise Weber Schaub were also there with their children. Some branches of Henry's family moved on to Kansas, where they still reside today.

One more Schaub family, David Schaub and his wife Marie Elisabeth Stoehr, emigrated from Rumbach in 1854, arriving Dec 29 on the Ship New Orleans. It is still unknown where they settled. He was a great grand nephew of the Johannes Schaub who arrived in 1737.
