Rotary club of Cossipore
was
formed in 1966. 21 eminent
personalities of north Calcutta had
joined hands to form this club to
render services to the needy and
extend fellowship amongst each
other, more precisely to enhance the
dream of Rtn. Paul Harris. The club
was sponsored by R. C. CALCUTTA. The
venue was the prestigious ordinance
members’ " The Cossipore Club", and
the official flag was approved
having photographs of the Cossipore
club, the Ordinance factory and the
local playground. On 24th of July,
1967 the charter was presented to
the 1st President of the club Rtn.
Surendra nath Mullick.
The
club had started in a very good note
by the Charter President with
activities lauded by the then
District 329. Rtn Surendra Mullick
continued till the year 1967-’68.
Rtn.
S.C.Asthana, a government officer,
took over from Rtn. Mullick and
continued till 1969-70. 1970-’71
saw another prominent businessman in
the printing business

K.C.Pal as the President. Rtn Pal
owned the famous Navajeevan Press
and continued as the club leader
till 1972-’73.

S.P.Maingi an executive in the
Calcutta Electric Supply took over
as the President. He had taken the
club to a new high. Rtn Maingi with
his wife used to distribute foods
and breads to the needy street
children every night without beating
the drums.

Sanat Chatterjee was the next leader
in the year 1974-’75.
In
1975-76 Rtn. Chitta Sen, the charter
sgt. at arms, a railway supplier and
a resident of Dakhineswar became
president. Rtn. Chitta Sen was a
knowledgeable person and was
considered as the encyclopedia of
Rotary. He was a 100% attendance
member till he breathed his last in
a tragic road accident.
1976-’77 saw a new breed of Rotarian
in Radheshyam Makharia. He was a
senior executive in Birla group of
companies. During his Presidentship
the club had earned laurels when he
took the members to Bangla Desh to
render service to the flood affected
villagers.
Rtn.
Kishori Mohan Dey, a famous
electrical and electronics trader
took over. Rtn Kishori Dey with his
ever smiling anne Ila gave a new
dimension in family values in the
club1977-78.
1978-‘79 saw Rtn Silbhadra Chowdhury
an executive in Sarabhai Chemicals,
emerged as the leader of the club.
He
then transferred his
responsibilities to the new leader
Rtn G.K.Gupta, a GKW officer.
Unfortunately, Rtn Gupta could not
continue his full term and Rtn
Sambhunath Sil became the stopgap
President.1980-’81
saw a dynamic young leader, a jute
magnate of the city, Rtn. Sankar
Ladia at the helm of the club. A
short and stocky man with strong
will and soft heart. He was a man
with strong will and soft heart. He
was a man who led the club from the
front and set examples for the
leaders in the making. He was made
President in 1983-84, 84-85 and
again in the silver jubilee year
1991-92. He was also a hundred
percenter till he met an accident of
wrong treatment.

Sambhunath Sil was made a
full-fledged President in 1981-82.
1982-83 brought another bright new
leader Rtn. Sushit Roy, a senior
executive in Saraswati press.
Fellowship was the prime activity of
this learned man. I
n
1984-85 Rtn D.P.Bagchi was a person
who brought his banking contacts of
U.B.I. into action with the Rotary
activities.
Rtn.
Susanta Gupta, a personnel from
Inchek Tyres, took over in1985-86.
He was a great follower of Rtn
Sushit Roy and was successful with
his fellowship activities.
After
completing his term, Rtn Susanta
Gupta handed over the mantle to Rtn
Lakshmi Narayan Dutta in 1986-87 he
was a branch manager of Calcutta
Port Trust.
1988-89 saw Rtn Gopal Narayan Roy
from Bhagyakul House taking over the
Presidentship responsibilities and
showing his charming personality to
keep the members and their annes
together.

Santi Ranjan Biswas was the next
leader. Tall and lanky and ever
smiling Rtn Santi was always ready
for the service calls. His year saw
the execution of water projects in
sinking many tube wells in different
localities.
1990-91 brought another tall man as
president in Rtn. N.P.Chakravarty.
An exporter of machineries, Rtn
N.P., was a fascinating President
and a good orator.
After
celebrating our silver jubilee in
1991-92, the leadership transferred
to Rtn S.N.Sarbadhikari in 1992-93.
Rtn S.N.’s contribution was
sponsorship of a new club R. C.
North Suburban among many.
In
1993-94 Rtn. Samir Dasgupta, owner
of a pharmaceutical unit and a
renowned sports personality became
the president of the club.
Rtn.Amal Chandra Banerjee a top
executive of Coal India became the
next president. He was a strict
follower of maintaining discipline
and decorum.
Rtn
Pijush Dasgupta, another sporting
personality from the city took over
the presidentship in 1995-96 and set
new avenues for the club.
1996-97 was a golden year for the
club. Rtn. Barun Catterjee a
shipping magnate took over and did
some fantastic works in the field of
RVC and RCC. Rtn Barun's year was
one of the best and long remembering
one in the history of this club. For
the first time a GSE team was
hosted.
1997-98 was the year of Rtn.Sankar
Bhowmick a businessman and
politician.
1998-99 saw a new leader in
Rtn.Vishwanath Jaiswal. He was a
great admirer of Rtn Barun and
carried out many activities in youth
education, health services,
vocational and RCC activities with
fellowship as prime activity. For
the first time there was a club
display in the District Conference
besides the club had bagged as many
as 18 awards in the District award
function. For the first time
individual RI citation was bagged by
Rtn Vishwanath.
Rtn.Tapan Dasgupta a veteran in club
management became the club’s
president in 1999-00. His tenure was
highlighted with successful children
programme and polio plus activity.
The
New Millennium's first President Rtn
Pradip Chowdhury was the leader in
2000-01.He continued the good
efforts of his predecessors. With
the help of the club members, Rtn
Pradip executed activities, which
kept the club members bonded
together.
Rtn
Deb Kumar Ghosh, the secretary in
the Board of Rtn Pradip took the
leadership mantle for the Rotary
year 2001-02. Being a fairly good
and Gold Medallist Architect, Rtn
Debu created a real cohesive
atmosphere within the club. Every
member extended his or her utmost
help in different activities that
were immaculately planned and
executed under the able leadership
of Rtn Deb Kumar.
Next
came Rtn Jatan Saha as the President
of the club. Rtn Jatan with his
amicable character gave the year
2002-’03 a great time to enjoy with
service and fellowship. A new club
R. C. Cal. LakeTown got chartered
under our sponsorship in this year.
Now in
the year of 2003-‘04 the baton is in
the hands of Rtn Neeladri Chatterjee
and being one of the most humble and
experienced member of this District
much is expected from him
