Clarksville, Virginia's first radio station, WLCQ signed on in 1984 as adult contemporary-formatted "Q98.3" under the ownership of JLC Properties. On Valentine's Day, 1999, WLCQ became WJLC "98.3 Cool Country", assuming the call letters of JLC Properties' South Boston station at 95.3, which became WHLF-FM. In 2001, Tom Joyner, the former owner of WTRG (now WRVA-FM), bought WJLC, along with several other stations across Southside Virginia. WJLC's antenna was moved to a tower near the northern Granville County community of Stovall and its studios were moved to a site along U.S. 15 in Oxford. On September 1st, 2001, WICE "Cool Oldies 98.3" debuted with an oldies format. In November 2004, Joyner sold the station, along with two others in South Hill, Virginia, to Lakes Media, LLC for $2.5 million. On February 27th, 2005, at 6 p.m., WICE dropped its oldies format for classic-leaning country and became known as WLUS "US 98.3".
