GAmerican Warriors Songs for Indian Veterans

"1997 Best Record of the Year" Native American Music Awards (NAMA)

American Warriors is a collection of Native American powwow songs revolving around an Indian warrior's preparation for battle. There is a protective song used by a fighter in conflict, a song of the mothers of warriors, victory songs from the Battle of Little Bighorn, armed services honor songs, and a song about Indian warriors in Desert Storm. Singers from six tribes are represented. Though it's instructive from an ethnomusicological standpoint (one of the songs was recorded in 1910, for instance), one can't help but be drawn into the spiritual perspective presented by the songs also, whether it is mediation for courage, celebration of victory, or recognition of service. --Kerry Dexter, Dirty Linen
