SURFRAT is a power rankings report done by one of our regular posters (from San Diego) on the message board BosoxBob. This report will be updated at BosoxBob's leisure, as the title explains, updates will be sporadic.
An explanation of how the rankings are calculated can be found at the bottom of this page.
This week features something new - an RPI based on the ratings I've been using to rank the teams. It can be viewed as an expected winning percentage if the team had played an average schedule. I think you'll find it to be much more realistic than the one ESPN uses (which has the Sox at #7 in the majors, and San Diego (!) as the top ranking NL team, and #4 overall).

Rank | Team | RPI | Record | Previous | Comment |
1 | Mariners | .715 | 22-9 | 1 | M's get smart and swap Pineiro into the rotation for Abbott, who is pitching true to form after an incredibly lucky 2001. |
2 | Y-----s | .651 | 18-14 | 4 | Move up in the rankings despite the sweep, due to strength of schedule and the Sox' inability to put runs on the board against the DRays. |
3 | Red Sox | .647 | 20-7 | 3 | And now the real season begins...will the offense produce enough against good teams to support the great starting pitching? |
4 | A's | .616 | 17-14 | 2 | A's, with the toughest schedule so far, looking forward to Friday, which brings 7 games against the DRays, 5 against the O's, and 3 against the Blue Jays. |
5 | White Sox | .612 | 19-12 | 5 | May need to look up in the standings at the Twins for a while until the schedule balances out. |
6 | Angels | .601 | 15-15 | 10 | Angels finally found their missing bats - outscored opponents 51-12 this week. |
7 | Orioles | .554 | 16-15 | 6 | O's petitioning Selig to let them play the Royals every game. |
8 | Rangers | .525 | 13-17 | 7 | Hey Carl, here's a real team player - "It's painful for me not to play. But I'll keep a big smile on my face and keep my chin up." - Gabe Kapler |
9 | Twins | .447 | 20-12 | 9 | Looking good now, but stand clear when they start to play some real teams. |
10 | Indians | .405 | 15-16 | 8 | It's hard to be successful with only 2/5 of a rotation. |
11 | Blue Jays | .345 | 9-20 | 11 | It's even harder to be successful with only 1/5 of a rotation. |
12 | Devil Rays | .294 | 9-20 | 13 | How bad are the Royals? DRays go 0-7 and leap over them in the rankings. |
13 | Royals | .291 | 8-21 | 12 | Hey Allard Baird, Muser wasn't the problem - you are. Still like that Jermaine Dye/Neifi Perez deal? |
14 | Tigers | .281 | 10-19 | 14 | One more decent week and they'll escape the bottom spot. |

Teams are rated on three factors: average runs scored, average runs allowed, and winning percentage. Each of these is weighted by the team's strength of schedule, which is determined from the opponent's average winning percentage and their opponent's average winning percentage. The combination of the three weighted factors produces an overall rating. |
