LOB

  • You could just see it coming from a million miles away last night. After Trot Nixon made that two base error on Brady Anderson's single to allow him to open the ninth on third, you knew for a fact that he was going to score. But not only that, you knew that since Anderson's run put the Os up by two that the Sox would absolutely score one run in the bottom of the inning and would leave at least the tying run on base too. As it turned out, they left the winning run on base (in scoring position) as well.

Troy O'Leary was the final culprit, being the one to ground out with the bases loaded to end the game in the ninth. Couldn't really blame him though, after his horrid start, he did have three hits last night. I think it would have been a bit much to ask for four.

It was one of those games from last year that we came all too acquainted with, but for some reason this one seemed even more frustrating. Probably because the Os are so bad and we've now lost three games to them this year. Add in the fact as a team we left 10 runners on base, and if you add all the times that different batters left the same guys on base, that number jumps to 21 LOBs for the night. UGH!!!!

I really thought they might win that game though. With men on first and second with one out and Everett and Manny coming to the plate I thought things looked good. I was all set to write about how last year we'd have scored a run then teased us the rest of the way, only to lose. But this year is supposed to be different, and it will be, it just wasn't last night. Everett hit a slow roller that allowed the runners to move to 2nd and 3rd, but with Manny coming to the plate and first base open you knew he wasn't going to get a shot. The Os walked him choosing rather to go at O'Leary and his slump than Manny and his taste for the dramatic.

The first thing I thought of when O'Leary came up was how Hargrove walked Nomar twice in game five of the 99 playoffs only to have Troy hit dingers to follow both times. I would have loved for Troy to stick it too him one more time, but it didn't happen, so I guess I should stop dwelling.

Tough game to lose, real tough. But if we can grab tonight's that'll be two out of three, and if we can take two from every series, we'll be all set.

The only other notable was the great job the bullpen put in last night. Frank Castillo was knocked around hard in the first and was eventually lifted by the fourth. The trio of Schourek, Garces, and Beck then held the Os to the one unearned run the rest of the way. Pretty damn good if you ask me, and definitely deserving of a win.

Oh well, it's over with. Tomo Ohka takes the hill tonight (weather permitting) against Jose Mercedes of the Os. Lets nab this one, then its time to bring on the Y----s for a four game weekend set.
