Eighth inning mayhem

  • Last night was a perfect example of good pitching shutting down good hitting. Albie Lopez of the D-Rays shut down a Sox team who had scored ten runs the previous night like it was no big deal. Lucky for us though, Lopez tired and after pitching shutout ball thru seven innings (and walking the first two batters of the eighth) he handed it over to the bullpen. Bad idea.

It looked at first like another opportunity would be squandered by the Sox as after Carl Everett and Manny Ramirez lead off the inning with back-to-back walks, Dante Bichette then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, much to the chagrin of Sox fans.

Next up was Scott Hatteberg who proceeded to line a crucial game tying single up the middle to score Everett from third. After that the floodgates opened and the Sox would score eight more times in the inning, all on two outs. The biggest blows coming off the bats of Brian Daubach (3-Run HR), Jose Offerman (2-Run 2B) and Darren Lewis (2-Run HR) who had pinch run for Ramirez earlier in the inning.

Bad luck was the name of the game for Bichette for the night as after the DLew homer, he came up again to make the last out of the inning and was responsible for all three eighth inning outs.

The pitching? Once again, awesome. Paxton Crawford gave the Sox 6.2 more strong innings only allowing one run in the second inning. But for the second time in two starts Paxton would not get the win as the Sox started scoring runs again after he left the game. The important part is getting the W though and Crawford has looked sharp in all three of his starts thus far.

Rolando Arrojo seems to be fitting nicely into the relief role as he finished up the final 2.1 innings allowing only one hit and striking out two.

The Sox look for the three game sweep tonight with Pedro on the mound before they head into the bowls of the Evil Empire with Hideo Nomo, Frank Castillo, and Tomo Ohka the probable starters for the series.
