Back on the wagon

  • A big test was passed with flying colors last night in the Sox win vs the Twins. Not because going into this series the Twins were the best team in baseball (though that should not be brushed aside by any means), but because of the way they lost the last game on Sunday in NY. Sunday was one of those games that can put you into a spiral, a spiral that goes in the same direction when you pull the drain lid in your sink.

But against a very good and scorching hot Twins team the Sox came out on top and quite convincingly so. Paxton Crawford had a rough start of it, allowing three runs in the first inning, but then he settled down and threw shutout ball thru the fifth. Due to the high pitch count Jimy opted to go with Tim Wakefield in the sixth and with the exception of one bad pitch (a solo homer to Matt Lawton) Wakes was awesome. Anyone notice how much the knuckler seemed to be dancing last night. I think Tim could have gone another four last night with just as little trouble.

The offensive star of the night was Carl Everett who, with two outs in the second, blasted a grand slam into the net to push the Sox ahead (5-3 at the time) for good. Going into the game Everett was in somewhat of a mini-slump, nice way to break out. Seems like the grand salamis have been quite plentiful as of late around baseball. I think this may be the 7th or 8th within a week now.

Manny Ramirez also continues to mash. Though he only had one RBI last night (due to Everett taking his opportunities) he had another three hits raising his average to .429, I guess that's pretty good.

Another big test tonight as the Sox will not only face the best team in baseball, but they will also go against Brad Radke who may be the best pitcher in baseball right now (behind Pedro of course). Radke has been nasty right out of the gate and brings a 4-0 record to Fenway. This guy may be on my fantasy team, but screw it, lets mash him.

On the other side is Pedro, if we can give him a couple of runs to work with, then back on the winning streak trail we will be.

  • Couple other notables to mention:

This most probably already know, but with Chris Stynes activation before yesterday's game, Lou Merloni was optioned back to Pawtucket. This was Lou's last option, so the next time the Sox call him up, he cannot be sent back to AAA without clearing waivers. Something that is not likely to happen (clearing waivers).

John Valentin started his rehab stint in Pawtucket last night and went 2-4 with a double and a homer. By the end of the week (barring any setbacks) Val should be ready for activation. This is where a roster move becomes even more interesting. I see two choices: 1) Release Craig Grebeck who I thought may get the axe with the activation of Stynes. 2) Send Shea Hillenbrand down to AAA. Shea definitely would not deserve this fate, but with the Sox trying to hold on to as may bodies at SS as possible, I think this may happen.

A final note. Brian Rose is now a member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, he was claimed off waivers yesterday from the Mets, making it three teams who have now given up on him. I wonder if Rose had made it past the Rays and a few other teams (actually allot of other teams) if the Sox would have grabbed him back?

  • I know I said yesterday that the Weekly Stats section would be updated by today, but I didn't realize how much catching up I had to do from while I was away over the weekend. I'm going to try and have it up later today.
