Nothing like a little home cooking

  • Now that's more like it. Hurry up, everyone back on the bandwagon. Just kidding, I know all the folks who come here are not of the bandwagon variety, but it is amazing how the "approval rating" of the team changes like night and day around here.

What more can be said that the boxscore doesn't explain by itself? Other than a rocky first inning for Tomo Ohka, the Sox cruised to their second win of the season behind the now raging bat of Manny Ramirez (2-4, R, 4RBI, HR). In Ohka's defense though, he actually should have escaped the first inning with only giving up one run. But a failed double play ball (Lansing at SS) extended the first longer than it should have and allowed the Rays to put a couple more on the board.

But after that it was all Sox.

Due to his high pitch count thru four innings Ohka was lifted early and did not qualify for the win. Taking over for him in the fifth was Tim Wakefield who threw three strong innings allowing only one run and grabbed the 'W' on the way.

The 8th and 9th were filled out by Pete Schourek and Rolando Arrojo respectively and shut down any hope for the Rays the rest of the way.

The bats came out in full force from the get go. Also smashing homers along with Manny were Carl Everett and (GASP!) Mike Lansing. Both were solo shots.

In fact the only real bad news for the day came before the game even started. Chris Stynes had to be placed on the 15-Day DL with a hamstring pull. Great, all we needed, another injury. Hopefully Stynes can return immediately after his two-week hiatus.

Called up to take Stynes spot was Lou Merloni.

With the injury to Stynes, the door opened for Jose Offerman to get another start. Maybe his benching by Jimy is exactly the kick in the but he needed. It's still too early to tell, but after Offy's two hit night on Thursday, he followed it up on Friday with three more. Sometimes all it takes is a little push.

Trot Nixon, taking over the leadoff spot for now, stayed relatively hot with a hit and an RBI, along with a couple of big walks. One to help set-up Manny's dramatics in the first, and the other coming with the bases loaded in the eighth. This is exactly what the #1 and #2 guys need to do, get on base, and Trot and Offy, did just that yesterday.

One last note, Shea Hillenbrand logged his first multiple hit game of his young career and extended his hitting streak to four games.

Paxton Crawford takes the hill today to finish out the Sox rotation. A win today, and Pedro coming back up tomorrow, the ball may just start rolling in the right direction.
