Home away from home?

  • If I hadn't known the Sox were on the road for eleven games I would have sworn that the game was at home yesterday. The Expos average attendance each game is between 8 and 9000. Yesterday, nearly 33,000 fans showed up for the game and I'd say 27,000 were Sox fans. We thought it was ridiculous in Florida and Tampa, but by far, yesterday in Montreal was easily the biggest hoard of Sox fans outside of Fenway Park.

If I were an Expos fan or player I'd be pretty ticked, but I'm not, and thought it was great. How good do you think it made the team feel yesterday to know that 20,000+ made the road trip from New England up to Canada just to see them play. If that is not a pick-me-up I don't know what is... Especially after the anemic display of offense shown in New York the previous few days.

Hideo Nomo (5IP 5H 5R 5ER 4BB 7K 2HR W): Not a great start, his splitter actually seemed to be working well, but then there would be lapses and the Spos would get themselves back into the game. Good enough to beat Montreal, but much improvement is needed next time out.

Chris Stynes (4-5 3R 4RBI 2HR): Pretty much single handedly won that game yesterday. Does anyone remember that he was hit in the face by a pitch earlier in the season? He comes back off the DL and doesn't miss a beat. This guy is a gamer, and as much as we hate to give DD any credit, you have to tip your cap to him for this one. Both players he traded to get Stynes (Donnie Sadler and Michael Coleman) aren't even with the Reds anymore. Sadler was traded to the Royals recently and is back in AAA and Coleman was traded to the Y-----s early in the season and followed his track record almost immediately and got hurt (has been out since).

Brian Daubach (2-3 2RBI 2B): Stynes may have been the player of the day but we can't forget Dauber's clutch 2-out double in the 5th (which followed a 2-out hit by Stynes) that pushed things back out of reach for the Spos.

Derek Lowe (1IP 2H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K S): He shut the door and we won so we can't complain too much. But recently Lowe has been showing signs of going back into a funk, which seems to be right in line with last season. Around now last season Lowe went a couple of weeks where he got pounded, so far he hasn't blown anything yet, but he is getting hit more regularly. I'm sure Joe K and Jimy are noticing this and need to nip it in the but immediately. The rest of the pen has started out this second half very well so far, we don't need Lowe stinking it up again (like April).

We have Tomo Ohka scheduled to take the hill tonight and I think this is a good team for him to get things turned around against. Tomo's last two starts have been far from anything resembling his first month of the season. The Expos are a team we should beat, no excuses, even for a rookie (2nd yr).

Oh, and one final note, A thanks goes out to the Phillies for punding Pettite and the Evil Ones yesterday 9-3 to help move us back to within 1/2 game of first. Did anyone see the highlights of that game? How bad did Posada look? :)
