Two out mayhem

  • Ah, it's nice to see clutch hits once in a while, clutch being runners in scoring position and two outs. I was there last night and I'll tell ya, seeing all those two-out singles were just as good as any three run jack I've ever seen. The even more impressive part about the two-out rally was that several of the five straight singles were on 0-2 & 1-2 counts. Poor pitching by Joey Hamilton or jut good concentration on the hitters part? Probably somewhere in between, but it was fun to watch regardless.

David Cone (6.1IP 6H 3R 3ER 1BB 3K 1HR W): Does this guy need to do anything else to prove himself this year? Probably not, but for some reason, until he gets out of the first inning or two, I still don't trust him out there. You'd think a 6-1 record and 10-1 team record when he starts would be enough to make anyone come around.

The really weird thing with Cone is that along with myself and from what I saw in the bleachers last night, some fans still see him in pinstripes. I don't know why, the Sox uni seems to be fitting real well at the moment.

Rod Beck (1IP 2H 1R 1ER 0BB 0K 1HR): He's really scaring the heck out of me when he steps out on the mound lately. The ball seems to just jump off the bat when he throws it. Hey DD, we need another arm out there, several of the pitchers in the pen are suffering from over work, a definite side effect of not having Pedro in the rotation.

On Baseball Tonight after the game Gammons mentioned that since Pedro has been out the pen ERA had risen somewhere in the vacinity of 1.3 runs per game. I hope an indicator light is going off in DD's head.

  • NOMAR! As every good Sox fans knows Nomar played in his first game since the surgery yesterday with the Paw Sox. He went 0-3 and was hit by a pitch (first at bat). Can't really say from the replay on ESPN if he looked good or not, but I'll take the lack of any news about the wrist to be good news.

  • Trade Talk: If it hasn't been finalized as of the time I write this, it looks like it will shortly. The A's are definitely going to make a run (won 15 of last 20) as they are about to make a deal that will bring Jermaine Dye to the team. It's a 3-team trade that has Neife Perez of the Rockies going to the Royals and the A's sending minor leaguers over to Colorado.

Not that anyone has been thinking about just getting into the playoffs via the Wild Card, but with this imminent deal, it makes the division probably the only way in for a member of the AL East.

The talk on Ted Nation last night as I was driving home from the game was of the following players: Ugeth Urbina, Troy Percival, Pedro Astacio, Sterling Hitchcock, and Phil Nevin. Urbina seems the most realistic to be able to attain, but his health is the major question and Troy Percival is probably the least likely to happen.

Pedro Astacio won't be in a Sox uniform unless the Rockies lessen their demands and as far as any deal with the Padres goes, Hitchcock would help, but if DD were to swing a deal for Phil Nevin, I'd run down to Boston in my PJs and give him a kiss. Did I actually just write that? UGH! I'm hopeless.

  • Arrojo vs Loaiza tonight. No help from Detroit last night, got to keep winning.
