Pitching not quite good enough

  • I'm not saying that because I think it was the pitching that lost the game last night. I say it because with the anemic offense we've become accustomed too, it forces the staff to be near perfect night in and night out. Wakefield pitched well enough for his 5th win of the season, but like many times before, the Sox squandered plenty of opportunities.

As a team they left 8 runners on base, but that jumps to 17 if you do it individually.

    1st Inning - 1st & 2nd (1 out): failed to score.
    2nd Inning - 1st & 2nd (1 out): failed to score
    4th Inning - 1st & 2nd (1 out): failed to score
    6th Inning - 2nd (0 out): failed to score
    9th Inning - 2nd & 3rd (2 out): failed to score

    Ridiculous!

Other than Carl Everett (2-4 2RBI) getting a big two out hit in the 5th for our only two runs, and Tim Wakefield (6IP 9H 3R 3ER 3BB 6K) throwing another winnable start, there's pretty much nothing good to mention about this one. Oh, wait, Troy O'Leary (1-1) finally broke our team hitless streak of 34 at bats without a pinch hit. Whoopee...

  • Can anything else can go wrong with this team? I say this because we have two more guys on the shelf, so to speak. The reason Marcus Jensen was out there catching Wakes last night was not because Hatteberg needed a day off, but because the 'bug' Manny caught has spread, and last night Hatteberg and Chris Stynes fell victim. No idea how long they'll be out.

A frustrating night of missed chances. With Pedro missing his start on Friday and with the team headed to Atlanta (won 12 of 16) for a weekend series, the game tonight becomes even bigger. David Cone needs to have another strong outing and the offense needs to supply a little support.
