9 in a game Maddux pitched?

  • Well it's early Saturday morning as I write this, so it's going to be short and sweet. What a win. In yesterday's write up I mentioned 'the plan' which was basically what I thought the Sox needed to do to go 18-10 for the month of June. For this three game set with the Braves all I asked for was one win, but I certainly didn't expect it to come against Greg Maddux. Three runs in the first inning? Three successful hit and runs in the first as well? Are these the Red Sox?

Obviously the Sox could still only win one in this series, but there in perfect position to grab more than one and can get themselves ahead of 'the plan'.

Both Offerman and Stynes had huge games combining to go 8-11 and 5 runs scored and you have to give Rolando Arrojo some huge credit for throwing five solid innings only allowing 2 earned runs in the process.

But probably the biggest play in the game was by Trot Nixon in the bottom the ninth. It was just after Trot tied the game with a sac-fly in the top of the inning. The Braves leadoff hitter sent a liner into the gap, which would have gone for at least a double and put the winning run into scoring position with no outs. Trot went full horizontal and snared the liner. That catch right there was a game saver and made me very glad that Jimy allowed Trot to hit in the top of the inning even though a lefty was on the mound. Though I guess in the NL Parks there wouldn't be much pinch-hitting for non-pitchers anyway.

Nomo goes today against John Burkett. John Burkett, you say that name and probably get excited about winning. Not that we can't beat him, but Burkett has been very good this year and this will not be an easy game. 'The plan' guys think of 'the plan'.
