What more to ask for?

  • Well, I certainly didn't expect that over the weekend. I realize the Braves are not the same team they've been in recent years, but they're still the Atlanta Braves and still a very formidable foe. As I've mentioned a few times before I was only expecting/hoping for one in this series. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when the weekend was over.

Oh, and any of you who were watching the Y-----/Met game and shut it off when the Evil Ones were well in the lead, missed some big fireworks in the 8th inning (including me). The Mets rallied for six in the 8th, jumpstarted by an error from Derek Jeter, and ending with a two run bomb off the bat of Mike Piazza to steal one game in the series and put our lead in the East back to two games. Thank you NY. Did I just say that?

  • What more could we possibly ask from our pitching staff? We may not have a bunch of huge names (save Pedro and Lowe) but for the last 2 1/2 seasons they've just flat out got it done. Yesterday was no exception.

Frank Castillo (5.2IP 4H 2R 2ER 1BB 2K W): I can't say enough about what a huge surprise this guy has been for us. I know he was doing the same thing last year for Toronto before he got hurt, but I never thought it was anything more than a flash in the pan.

Derek Lowe (2.1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 3K): Ah, the luxury of having a closer that can go more than one inning.

Nothing especially flashy with the bats, but enough to get it done. Everett has been really strange to say the least with the bat this year. To me, he's been very on again, off again. Like yesterday he went 2-4 2R RBI 2B, but tomorrow he'll go 0-4 with 3 whiffs. Very odd.

  • Some good news on the Nomar front, IF, it's accurate. I heard on the radio this morning that Nomar could start workouts with the team next week. I will take that news (with a grain of salt) as all is going well with rehab and there have been no setbacks. So far we've more than stayed afloat without our #1 guy, so there's no reason to rush back to quickly.

Granted the O needs something. They teased us on Monday with a good offensive showing against a great starter, but then reverted back to normal for the 2nd and 3rd game of the series, getting blanked on Saturday and only scraping together four in yesterday's close win. But so far, it's been enough.

  • One other tid-bit to mention. I read in baseball weekly that the A's may be very close to firing their manager Art Howe. How they can do this after what Oakland did last year, I have no idea. But if this is the case they may not be far from wholesaling their stars. As much as I like Dauber and all, if the A's dangle Giambi out there, I hope DD makes a serious bid to get him. How realistic is it? I have no idea. But the just the thought of a line-up of Nomar, Manny, Giambi, Everett, and Bichette sends shivers down my spine.

  • Hey everyone, does anyone realize we just went 6-3 in our first go around with interleague play? With the toughest part of the month's schedule now out of the way, we can set our sites at the next twelve games being against Tampa Bay and Toronto. As I've mentioned before, there are no guarantees, but as the saying goes: If we are destined to repeat history, hopefully we'll repeat some recent history against both of these teams.
