Whew!

  • Had we lost the game last night I think it would have been one of the most demoralizing in a long time, and possibly sent the team into a tailspin. The ninth inning was ugly but we got the W and that's all that matters come October.

Timmhay (8.1IP 1H 3R 0ER 4BB 8K W): Sorry for the South Park reference but I couldn't resist. I would have been willing to exchange Nomo's no-hitter from early in the season in order for Wakes to get one last night. He's definitely a guy who deserveds it, but it jut didn't happen. I'm not blaming Offerman, but I think his miscue (not sure it was an error) to start the 9th is what threw everything off. After that Wakes seemed to have a hard time finding the zone like he had been all game long. Oh well, it was still as good a performance as we'll see all year from anyone, including Pedro.

Trot Nixon 2-4 2R 2RBI 2HR: At the time his second solo shot of the game, which came in the top of the ninth, seemed like nothing more than a nice capper on the night. Little did we know it would end up being the game wining hit. Regardless, it was a good night for Trot, and it also seems like some of the other guys are stepping it up at the plate so we don't have to count on Manny every time out. Especially with Manny in the midst of a 3-23 slump.

  • Another knuckle baller helped us out as well last night. Steve Sparks of the Tigers threw a gem against the 'Evil Empire' en route to a 7-1 Detroit win. With that loss NY falls to 2 & 1/2 behind the Sox and that was also not the only thing that went wrong for the Empire last night.

The deal between Montreal and New York that had Ugeth Urbina going to the Y---s to bolster their pen, fell through last night. It was a two for one deal, but both Urbina and one of the players NY was sending to Montreal failed their physicals. So now their back at square one and no deal is imminent.

  • There was even more good news on the Sox front as it was announced that Pedro Martinez will make his scheduled start on Thursday against the D-Rays. I know I'll be trembling with every pitch waiting for something to go wrong, but it'll be good to see him back out there.

  • David Cone is back out on the hill tonight coming off two straight strong performances. You'll remember last time out he was roughed up early (3ER 2HR) but then settled down and allowed virtually nothing the rest of the way. I'll be looking for Cone to be strong straight thru tonight.
