Streak snapped

  • It wasn't pretty but at least the losing streak is over. With the exception of Derek Lowe's two shutout innings in the 8th and 9th the offense had to do pretty much all the work last night as it seems were in the middle of a pitching funk.

Kind of weird to say that even though we've got great performances out of Wakefield and Nomo recently. But with the shellacking Castillo took on Saturday and the way the pen (in general) has been getting it handed to them, it just kind of makes the whole picture look bad. But enough of the not so good, we did win after all.

David Cone (5IP 6H 5R 5ER 5BB 3K W): I'm sure he's happy that his teammates picked him up and got him the win (why can't they do this for Pedro) but I'm sure he's not happy at all with his performance. Eleven base runners in five innings simply doesn't cut it and giving up a homer (solo or not) to the light hitting Randy Winn just makes it look worse.

    Pete Schourek (2/3IP 1H 1R 1ER 1BB 0K): Need I say more?

Dante Bichette (2-5 2R 5RBI 2B HR): Get on my back and I shall lead you to the promise land. Which is exactly what Dante did last night. No doubt he's proven over the last couple of weeks that he belongs in the line-up every day, and if both he and Manny can heat it up at the same time the runs will be plentiful.

The Rest of the bats: Can't really make any complaints about the O at all, they came thru when it counted. Unlike a certain, not too long ago, Toronto series that we will forget about immediately.

What scares me at the moment is that outside of Derek Lowe the pen has been suspect at best lately. No need to delve into the woes of Pete Schourek any further, even Jimy has to be rethinking his strategy at this point. But both Rod Beck and recently Rich Garces have joined the hit parade, and this is a parade you don't want to be a part of. Hopefully this is just a bad stretch, but if it continues we may need DD to get on the horn and get us another arm, preferably a lefty one.

Our lead over the Evil Ones stayed at two as the Indians coughed up a lead late after a great comeback last night. Though it was nice to see newly acquired (by NY) Jay Witasick, get pounded a bit in his first appearance, hopefully it continues.

Pedro tonight, time to get the ole W streak going again.
