Cone saves job

  • Before I get to the game a quick update on the Jason Varitek situation, if you haven't heard already. My prediction yesterday was that he'd be out 6-8 weeks, and I was pretty close as the prognosis called for 8-10 weeks on the DL. No Need for me to go further into how big a blow this is to the team. Anyone who doesn't see this as a huge (like a few callers on WEEI yesterday) is an idiot. Sorry to be so blunt, but anyone who knows what Tek brings to the table, knows this to be true.

In Tek's absence the Sox called up Marucs Jensen, as you can see by his numbers, he's nothing special.

  • Here's a link to an update on the selling of the team situation. Eight potential buyers have been approved by Major League Baseball, including current Bruins owner Jeromy Jacobs. God, please, NO!

  • The game. David Cone hit the mound last night perhaps in his last chance to prove that he could still get it done. And as much as I still don't think he'll get much done for us this year, I must give credit when it's due, Cone was awesome.

David Cone (6IP 6H 1R 1ER 0BB 7K W): What more can be said that the pitching line doesn't explain? Nice job Coney.

The offense continues to play Jeckyl and Hide though. On Tuesday we had to wait 18 innings for the team score four runs and end the marathon. The next day they scored a whopping 3 en rout to a 7-3 loss. Then Thursday we were treated to some big offense with an 8-1 win. Last night we reverted back to the Evil We Can't Hit Sox. The three solo shots that were hit were enough, as always the pitching held their end of the bargain, and since we won I guess the O did too.

Manny, Bichette, Stynes (5-10 3R 3RBI 3HR): If we could just get some runners on in these situations this type of game would have been a thumping instead of a nail biter.

Rest of the offense (3-19 4K): Take out Offerman's 2-4 and that puts the rest of them at 1-15. Wow! That's bad...

I'll be at the game today up in the bleachers very close to Kerrigan's K Men. I'll be with my Dad (who I take to a game annually) in section 41 row 43 seats 1 & 2. If you going to be out there come find me, I'd like to meet a few of the faces.

Oh, by the way, Pedro will be taking the hill, hopefully Jimy won't be compelled to take him out after six this time around.
