Finally, A Win
But a costly one

  • So far the word for this spring training has been 'meaningless'. What I mean by that is the fact that our record going into yesterday's game was 2-12 and we had lost eight in a row. I'm sure I don't have to explain again why what happens (for the most part) in these games, is meaningless.

So finally yesterday, a win. A pair of two-run homers in the 7th and 8th innings by Brian Daubach and Lou Merloni respectively, propelled the Sox to victory. But compared to what else happened yesterday, this game was, guess what, meaningless.

  • Two more Red Sox players found themselves injured either during the game yesterday or in practice sessions. The first, Manny Ramirez, though not seen to be serious, took himself out of the game when he 'tweaked' his hamstring, the same one he injured last year, chasing a deep fly ball in the third inning. Here are the comments made on ESPN.com:

Right fielder Manny Ramirez took himself out of Wednesday's spring training game against the Twins in the middle of the third inning with a mild left hamstring strain. Ramirez appeared to pull up while chasing Matt Lawton's deep hit to his left. The ball fell in for a double. Ramirez pulled the hamstring last year and missed 44 games while playing for the Cleveland, but this injury is not in the same spot, the Red Sox said. Some fans at City of Palms Park booed Ramirez, who signed a $160 million, eight-year contract during the offseason. Ramirez was replaced in right field by Trot Nixon.

Booed Manny? Huh? Why? If the transplants down in Florida are booing him now, just wait till the Sox get up to Boston, things could get ugly quick.

The second Red Sox injury occurred off the field, or I should say, in a non-game situation. Brett Saberhagen, after throwing about 40 pitches in a simulated game, had to cut it short after experiencing pain in his pitching arm. We all knew that if Sabes returns at all it wouldn't be till late April or early May. But if he's experiencing pain now, why should we expect it to go away after throwing more later? Best thing to do is expect nothing from Sabes and anything we do get out of him will be bonus.

  • In other team affairs, Jimy shook the roster up a bit by announcing that Rolando Arrojo has been demoted to the bull-pen and Tim Wakefield promoted to the rotation. As much as I supported Arrojo to this point, I totally agree with this move. He has done nothing to keep his spot in the rotation, and Wakefield has done everything to deserve to get back in.

Unfortunately though, I think this is just temporary. Jimy has done stuff like this before to try and motivate players. Maybe after a few time out of the pen Arrojo will finally start concentrating and get back into the good graces of the coaches.

Another interesting note to mention though, is that IF David Cone's injury the other day turns out to be worse than expected, or at least hold him back from starting the season, that opens a slot for Tomo Ohka in the rotation. All along many of us have said that both Wakefield and Ohka deserve a number in the rotation. But the question is whom do you bump? Luckily (or unluckily) for Jimy, the decisions are being made for him.

A suggestion from this Sox fan if we start the season with Tim and Tomo in the rotation is this:
    1. Pedro   2. Wakefield   3. Nomo   4. Castillo   5. Ohka
