Another win and a scare

  • Things were relatively quiet in camp yesterday as the Sox cruised to their second win in as many days behind a very impressive performance from Frank Castillo. Castillo (4 2/3IP 5H 1ER 1BB and 3Ks) would have gone the full five but he was hit by a line drive on his pitching hand. He was taken out of the game immediately as a precaution, but no damage was done. After the game Castillo described the play: He said, as the ball was coming at him he put both his glove and hand up to shield himself. The ball nipped off his glove and hit him pretty much flush in the hand, stung, and the pain went away, no worries he says.

Jimy Williams, not taking any chances, took his pitcher out of the game immediately and ended Castillo's strong performance, blemished only by a solo homer off the bat of Ben Grieve in the fourth.

As for the offense, it was pretty well distributed, with ten players combining for eleven hits. Troy O'Leary kept on buzzing along with his fourth homer of the spring and at the same time changing the minds of some of the fans as far as his status with the team.

So as a whole it was a good day for the Sox, finally something to smile about. Even though it is spring training and (to use my favorite word) meaningless.
