Make it three

  • Hey, this is kind of fun when you win a few. And that's just what the sox did extending their spring winning streak to three by defeating the Pirates 8-6 yesterday.

Pitching story of the day was Tomo Ohka (4IP 4H 2ER 0BB 5K) going four pretty good innings, allowing only four hits and no walks while striking out five on the way to the win. With the injury to David Cone and demotion of Rolando Arrojo to the pen (for now), Ohka has found himself in the running for a spot in the rotation. Which is something I think is a very good thing. Ohka doesn't need to go back to AAA and continue to dominate. He needs to be put in the rotation and be given a fair shake. Even if he gets off to a rough start (though it's not expected) Jimy needs to stick with him. The Sox are notorious for not letting rookie pitchers develop, opting to trade them away for veteran help.

Ohka and Paxton Crawford are two pitching prospects we cannot let get away. Both could serve as a very good young nucleus around Pedro in the rotation for the future, and both deserve to prove if they can do it or not. Crawford isn't quite as ready for the big time as his teammate, but it won't be long before he gets the call to show what he can do.

The offense was lead by four home runs off the bats of Chris Stynes, Carl Everett, Mike Lansing, and Morgan Burkhart. Whether these balls left the park or not isn't a big deal, the fact that good hard contact is being made is the thing we want to see during the spring, and all four of these guys did just that yesterday.

It's especially good to see Stynes getting back on track after being out for a few games to nurse an injury and Morgan Burkhart is doing a good job of making life miserable for Jimy Williams as far as deciding who stays and who goes.

    Trot, Manny, Cone

  • In other teams news Manny Ramirez looks to have no ill effects from his 'tweaked' hamstring. Manny was seen moving about the clubhouse with no noticeable limp or problems. He was, however, held out of the game for precautionary reasons I'm sure.

  • Speaking of Manny, Trot Nixon had some words to say about him after the booing incident. Trot commented that Manny is indeed out there giving it all he has, he hasn't been dogging it, and he thinks that when the team gets up to Boston there we be nothing but praise and cheers waiting for him. I couldn't agree more Trot.

  • The was also some minor news on the David Cone front. Cone decided not to get certain tests done on his arm, stating that he's past those things in his career. He said he can either do it or he can't, we'll just have to see how it goes. He did not rule out the possibility of a cortisone shot or two to relieve the pain if needed.

If Cone makes the team (looking remote right now) I think this is going to be it for him. Had he put in a half way decent season last year he probably would have retired then, but a horrific year compelled him to give it another go and try to go out on top of his game.

Wow, long commentary today. See what happens when we win a few games, I just can't shut up.
