Castillo clobbered, but another win

  • Sorry, but i'm going the lazy route today. I'm in the middle of setting up a huge stat section for the site, and since it's still the spring I figured I could get away with a recap or two pulled from ESPN.com. The original link can be found at the bottom of the recap.

  • FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Frank Castillo answered questions about his spot in the Red Sox starting rotation Wednesday, but his performance in Boston's 12-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies had nothing to do with it.

Castillo had his first poor outing of the spring, allowing six earned runs in three innings. But afterward he told reporters that manager Jimy Williams had slotted him as the No. 3 starter, behind Hideo Nomo and ace Pedro Martinez.

Williams would confirm only that Castillo was pitching the third game of the season.

``I don't put numbers on people,'' he said.

That leaves Tomo Ohka and Paxton Crawford for the final two slots, barring a trade. David Cone appears to be out of the mix after a throwing session was cut short Wednesday. Cone has a sore shoulder.

``He went and threw again and didn't feel that great,'' Williams said.

Cone wasn't in the clubhouse for comment after the game.

Philadelphia hit Castillo hard early, taking a 1-0 lead on Scott Rolen's first inning sacrifice fly, and expanding that to 5-0 in the second inning on Rob Ducey's RBI single and a three-run homer by Marlon Anderson.

The Red Sox got three back in their half of the inning on home runs by Jason Varitek and Chris Stynes off starter Randy Wolf, who allowed seven earned runs in 2 2-3 innings.

The Phillies increased the lead to 6-3 with a solo shot by Pat Burrell. Boston pulled ahead in the fifth, scoring four on a walk by Mike Lansing with the bases loaded, a two-run single by Darren Lewis and an RBI single by Stynes.

Varitek added another home run in the fourth. Brian Daubach also homered for Boston.

Notes: Wolf's spring ERA soared to 12.27 Wednesday (11 innings, 15 runs). ... Red Sox 3B Wilton Veras was optioned to Pawtucket Wednesday. ... The Phillies stole three bases in the first three innings, one each by Doug Glanville, Bobby Abreu, and Ducey. ... Stynes made a nice, kneeling grab near the railing in the second inning on an Anderson pop up.

  • A bump in the road for Castillo, but overall he's still been very good this spring. There can only be one Pedro. Also, it looks like Daubach is putting to rest any thoughts of him losing the job at first base.

I'm a bit nervous about having two rookies, Ohka and Crawford in the rotation (Ohka is close enough to be still called a rookie even if it's not official). Rookies notoriously cannot be counted upon to take the load for a full season. Lucky we have Wakefield waiting in the wings, and hopefully Cone and Sabes on the come back healing trail. I'll ride the rookie wave as long as we can though.
