Streak ended, Injuries continue to pile

  • Other than a lack of offense it was actually an encouraging day for the Sox, even though the winning streak was snapped yesterday by the Pirates. The staff, behind starter Tomo Ohka, allowed only three runs (all charged to Ohka) on eleven hits and no walks. What's even better is that four of the five pitchers that went for the Sox yesterday, will be on the Major League roster when the team breaks camp in a little over a week.

Ohka had a little trouble with the longball, giving up two bombs to the Pirates battery. But if you must give up homers, giving up solo shots is the way to go. There the least damaging and you still keep your team in the game.

  • Now onto the bad news. There maybe be new developments as I write this, but at the moment things are looking more and more bleak for that murderers row offense we are expecting in the Sox line-up come opening day.

Two different articles yesterday (one Globe and one Herald) both had different spins on the Nomar Garciaparra situation. The Globe stated (from sources) that surgery is unlikely and as long as the wrist responds well, Nomar should be in the line-up come opening day. The Herald on the other hand (from sources) said that surgery is looking more and more likely and that it would cost Nomar at the very least 10-16 weeks of the season. Ugh! If we got to choose, the choice is obvious, get better Nomar.

Also there is now word that Manny Ramirez may not be ready to open the season. On Wednesday Manny tried to work his hammy a little and felt a 'tweak' in it. Which basically means it's not healed yet, and another Sox star may end up on the shelf.

And to top it off, John Valentin has officially announced that he will NOT be ready for opening day. This is not quite as huge a blow as it was last year when we had nobody to put in his place, but I still maintain the Sox need Val in some fashion if they want to make a run at this thing.

  • I'm going to go off on a little tangent for my final word today. The SI Curse nailed us last year when the magazine predicted the Sox to finally win it all, we all know what happened. Then earlier this year they put Nomar on the cover, again, no need to explain.

Well, if you haven't seen this weeks cover yet, it has a picture of our buddy Derek Jeter holding up his four rings, and the caption reads: Why Fight It? The Y-----s Win Again! I think you all know where I'm going with this. Hello, Mr. SI Curse? You better not fail us now!
