The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

  • The Good:   Spring training or not, it's always fun to stomp the Y---s, and stomp is exactly what the Sox did against New York and Rogah yesterday. As a team the Sox banged out 19 hits (13 off Clemwad in 5 innings), and crossed the plate a total of 11 times (5 off Clemmy), en route to an 11-2 victory.

Tomo Ohka was on cruise control, throwing six very good innings, and allowing only one earned run on three hits and no walks. I'm not sure if Ohka is in line to see action again this spring with the season starting on Sunday (Monday for the Sox), so this is exactly the way we wanted to see him finish up with the Grapefruit League.

Overall a great effort up and down the line-up. Meaningless or not, we handed Rogah his behind yesterday.

  • The Bad:   Nomar Garciaparra all but officially announced that he will be having surgery on his wrist. In an interview I saw on channel 7 yesterday afternoon, Nomar said that he still wants to wait a few days to see what happens, but basically it's a done deal. No Nomar till Mid-July at the earliest and best case scenario. If a deal is going to be made for a SS it's either going to happen very soon, or the Sox will open the season with the platoon of Lou Merloni and Craig Grebeck in Nomar's spot.

  • The Ugly:   The saga that we have come to know as Carl Everett, added another page to it's life story yesterday. Carl missed the bus again yesterday which prompted Jimy Williams to scratch him from the game with the Y---s and send him home.

From what I've gathered, it wasn't a simple case of Carl missed the bus, and I'll provide a link to the article I read on the situation at the end of this schpeal.

As you know the Sox played the Y-----s at Legends Field in Tampa Bay yesterday. Everett makes his off-season home in Tampa and as is normal with players who live in the area wanted to ride home ahead of the team on Monday to be with his family. This is a practice that is very common and is usually not a problem as far as permission from the team goes.

Well I guess Everett did go to Jimy to let him know what he was doing, and Jimy said no. Why he said no is still a mystery, but as you could guess, Carl went anyway. So when the team bus left on Tuesday morning and Carl wasn't aboard, Jimy evoked his rule of "you must be on the bus on time to play" rule.

Obvioulsy Carl bears blame here, but I'm not sure that this time Jimy can't take some of the fault. I'm only going by what I know, but why would Jimy tell Carl he couldn't go home and meet the team in Tampa?

Regardless, before the game yesterday and Carl getting sent home, the two had an hour meeting. What transpired is unknown and will remain that way, but Jimy came out of the meeting saying he thinks things will be all right. Like he'd say anything else.

What does this mean? Who knows. But this is going to very quickly become a distraction if it's not already.
